So, in short... what are we actually expecting here (if anything)? Can Herzog outdo Abel Ferrara?
Last year, when the legendary Werner Herzog announced he was jumping on a "remake" of Abel Ferrara's cult classic "Bad Lieutenant," starring Nicolas Cage, people absolutely lost their minds—including Ferrara himself. He actually joked that he hoped the remake crew would burn in hell or blow up in a car crash together (LOL). Herzog later tried to backtrack, claiming he isn't really doing a remake since he’s never even seen the original, doesn't know who Abel Ferrara is, and was just approached by producer Ed Pressman, who owns the rights and wants to turn "Bad Lieutenant" into some kind of franchise. A leaked promo trailer has surfaced online, but it'll probably be yanked soon (so watch it now if you want), and honestly? It looks bizarre, hilarious, sleazy, and trashy all at once. You really can't tell what this thing is going to be. Besides Nicolas Cage, the cast features Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Shawn Hatosy, Denzel Whitaker, Xzibit, Shea Whigham, Katie Chonacas, and Brad Dourif. It should drop late this year.

Here's one of the first reviews out, calling it a pretty decent thriller...

Review : Law Abiding Citizen Quote : Overall

Overall, it’s a pretty killer thriller, though you definitely have to switch your brain off a bit to really lean into it.
Basically, think Death Wish meets Saw, but with a John Grisham twist. If that combo sounds like your kind of thing, you'll probably dig it—I know I did. It might not pass a logic test, but as far as entertaining thrillers go, it holds its own.

Holly shit... looks like Gibson is joining the ranks of those old-school legends who, following Clint in "Gran Torino" and Cane in "Harry Brown," decided it was time to take matters into their own hands... oh yeah... Mel Gibson is back and he's pissed😁

Some pretty glowing reviews... seriously positive ones here.

Review: Where the Wild Things Are>> - joblo.com

Spike Jonze's WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE is brilliant. It's weird, wild, wicked, and actually kind of terrifying... it's an instant classic. I grew up reading the Maurice Sendak book, and it always held a special place in my heart. Even now, it sticks with me. I loved the concept that these monsters were basically just people—they feel stuff, and they're usually just misunderstood. And as beautiful as the book is, Jonze managed to take that beauty and create a near flawless piece of fiction that lingers somewhere between reality and the fantastic imagination of childhood. I couldn't be happier with how this turned out; it nails exactly why the book is a classic while adding this heavy, human emotional layer to Max and his "wild things." You really shouldn't miss this one. Young or old, this is a magnificent motion picture that may well end up being the best film of the year come December.
Spike really cooked up a visual feast that tells a super solid, albeit simple, story. The way he uses imagery and music is top-tier. While you might be thrown off early on as Karen O and the kids blare along with this wild child rampaging through the house, you'll be hooked in no time. Ms. O (from The Yeahs) gives the soundtrack such a unique vibe. It is playful and exuberant fun and it truly embodies the visual treat that Spike serves up. Honestly, I rarely feel the need to get all wordy to describe how good a movie is, but I couldn't help myself with WTWTA. It's a magical, mystical, and occasionally creepy world that gets dark, but it still offers a glimmer of hope—reminding us that the most important things in life are often staring us right in the face. My rating...

10/10

Review: Where the Wild Things Are>> - HitFix

Review: Where the Wild Things Are - HitFix Quote: I don't use this word lightly, but "Where the Wild Things Are" is an absolute masterpiece, and it's the finest offering from any Hollywood studio thus far this year.

It's a stunning, painful, and deeply felt look at the chaos of being a kid, filtered through a lens of adult wisdom but kept firmly rooted in a child's perspective. It's smart, deceptively simple, and incredibly imaginative. I caught a rough cut back in 2007 at a notorious test screening, and even then, it shook me. The finished product is nothing short of a miracle—a film that perfectly captures that feeling of being too young to handle your own emotions, but just old enough to realize you have zero control over them.

In my book, it's also the gold standard for how to adapt a story.

Review: Where the Wild Things Are>> - AICN
Review: Where the Wild Things Are - AICN Quote: this is the most authentic and brilliant film about childhood I've ever laid eyes on. It hits hard on every single level—the sets, the wardrobe, the dialogue, the score, the lighting, the editing, the sound... everything. But mostly, it's the acting. You've got great performances from the humans, paired with some seriously tender, terrifying, and mind-blowing work from the Wild Things. Don't skip this one.

Review: Where the Wild Things Are - newsinfilm.com

Even with a PG rating, there's a chance this masterpiece flies right over the heads of kids younger than Max. Between the chaotic energy of the Wild Things and the slow, moody pacing, little kids might just end up fidgeting by the time Max starts feeling homesick. Where the Wild Things Are is really for the inner child in all of us, even if it doesn't click with every kid out there.

Looks like The Wachowskis and James McTeigue totally missed the mark this time around...

Review : ninja Assassin Quote : Overall

Ultimately this is Just an empty action film designed to please and I'm sur many People will enjoy IT. However, the movie kicks off with a killer sequence that actually nails the whole ninja mythos. Even the finale has enough over-the-top energy to be decent fun. It feels like McTeigue's camera crew just ran out of steam by the end, though, because the movement isn't nearly as frantic or dizzying as it was earlier. There are these little flashes where you actually get a sense of how a ninja would move through the shadows. If they’d leaned into that, if McTeigue had actually used a steadicam, or if they'd played up the mythology more, we might've had a classic on our hands. Instead, it’s just a one-and-done flick that leaves you feeling unsatisfied.

The Boondock Saints II in Movies ·
"The Boondock Saints," that gritty, stylized crime thriller from 1999, is a total cult classic now, even if critics absolutely hated on it back in the day. Still, there are plenty of people who haven't seen it or hadn't even heard the name until recently (myself included). It’s one of those movies that clearly took a heavy dose of influence from Quentin Tarantino—specifically "Reservoir Dogs." It was written and directed by then-unknown filmmaker Troy Duffy, which ended up being his one-shot deal as both writer and director. The main roles were played by Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, and Willem Dafoe.
Now, a decade after the original, Duffy is back to write and direct a sequel, probably hoping to recapture that lightning in a bottle. Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus are back as the religious vigilante brothers, joined by an ensemble including Billy Connolly, Clifton Collins Jr., Judd Nelson, Peter Fonda, and Julia Benz, who essentially steps in for Willem Dafoe. The whole thing was shot in Canada and is hitting limited theaters on October 30, 2009. We can probably expect it to hit US home video or streaming by 2010... or, you know, just find it on the nearest torrent site, haha...

PLOT SUMMARY
The Boondock Saints II plot summary: The film is the continuation of writer/director Troy Duffy’s tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery). The two have been in deep hiding with their father, The Duke (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives. When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible. With a new partner in crime (Clifton Collins Jr., Star Trek) and a sexy FBI operative (Julia Benz, TV's “Dexter”) hot on their trail…the Saints are back!

Looks like one of the first reviews from South by Southwest just dropped...

SXSW 2009 Review. Ninja Assassin

Assassin Quote : i knew pretty much exactly What to expect When i walked in to The screening of ninja Assasin tonight. It's a polished, high-budget, slightly homoerotic action flick with basically zero substance and a ton of CGI stunts. And honestly? That's exactly what I got.
Ultimately this is Just an empty action film designed to please and I'm sur many People will enjoy IT. Those looking for something that resembled V for Vendetta should look elsewhere. But if you just want slick, bloody martial arts, you might dig it.
Chaos on Brest Street! in Movies ·
fadedseal8 said:I actually like the casting. In those opening scenes where he's running, he carries this vibe of a predator targeting kids 😉. I don't mind the different mask, but it feels a bit too heavy on the CGI for my taste.

Something else caught my eye—people might disagree, but when he speaks at the end of the trailer, he reminds me a little of Ledger's Joker 🙂,
especially that "not one bit" line.

Yeah... and his voice sounds kinda "off," right? When he talks, it felt like the actor was struggling to enunciate because the mask was messing with him...🤷

But whatever, we gotta see the actual movie first. Right now, it's all just hype and guesswork.

I don't know, man... personally, this looks like every other modern "horror" flick out there. Plus, I'm really not feeling the new Freddy look. They cast an amazing actor for the part, but then they totally botched it with some "generic" mask. It doesn't capture anything about the original Freddy's vibe...🤷

Ryan Wood98 said:To be honest, I found the first one to be rather foolish, much like most American superhero movies (with a few exceptions, of course). So, I suppose I am not expecting much from the second one either.

Wasn't Iron Man actually the exception though?? At least that's how it looked to me, given all the hype and rave reviews...🤷

[Rec] 2 (2009) in Movies ·
Alright, here’s one of the early ones—maybe even the very first review for the sequel—straight from the Sundance Film Festival...

Sundance: REC 2

The only issue with [REC] 2 is that it doesn't hit quite as hard as the first one. When I Saw The First Film, people were losing their minds, and I was basically trying to crawl under my seat. This sequel didn't rattle me quite as much, even though the crowd I was with was pretty loud about it.
I reckon fans of the original [REC] are gonna love this, because it definitely holds its own. I just hope they don't mess with it like they did the first one by re-shooting everything as Quarantine 2 (even though I heard rumors that might be happening). If you dug the first movie, go see this. You won't regret it.
