PC Build + Monitor: $5k Budget in Desktops ·
I wasn't really pulling the trigger back then, but now? Now I definitely am, mostly because my laptop finally kicked the bucket on me.
It’s the same old story, really. I just want a "real" graphics card—none of that integrated junk. I assume it’s doable to put together a decent rig without breaking the bank too badly. Though, if budget isn't an issue, I could probably push it up to $1833. The monitor is plenty big enough at 21 inches. And honestly, skip the HDD; I just need a 240GB SSD to get things moving.
PC Build + Monitor: $5k Budget in Desktops ·
Like the headline says, I’m looking to pull together a full setup for about $750. My only real rule is that I want to buy everything from a single retailer.
It’ll be my daily driver for pretty much everything—gaming, multimedia, maybe some light Photoshop or CAD work down the line.
I’ve been reading lately that dedicated graphics cards are getting ridiculously overpriced, so I’m actually considering skipping one for now and just upgrading later when things settle down. I figure I'll get more bang for my buck with a better overall build if I go that route. Besides, I assume modern integrated graphics aren't totally useless while I wait for something decent to hit the shelves.
Thanks a lot for the help.

How to hide my current activity? in Forum Help! ·
Noah Miller6 said:uncheck the :Use Invisible Mode box

Actually, I think you’re supposed to check the box, not uncheck it, right? 🤷

And does that setting just hide your status when you're logged in, or does it also mask whatever specific page or activity you're actually looking at?

What exactly is so "brutal" about these tracks? If you actually want to hear what true brutality sounds like, go listen to some grindcore for once. 😉
Best external hard drives to buy right now? in Computer Peripherals ·
I was wondering if anyone could point me toward some budget-friendly portable drives in the 250 to 500 GB range? Or, looking at the discussions here, would I actually be better off just picking up a standard internal drive and slapping it into an external enclosure? I see a lot of you folks mentioning that route lately... thanks

And why on earth would they do that for me? Shouldn't it be their job to fix this mess so it stops happening in the first place? ☕

Ridiculous.

Another little bit of gambling action... honestly, I just wish they’d been paying out more lately. It feels like it's been an absolute eternity since we saw any real movement on that front.
I went with the "Yeah, I’ll stare at it all day, she’s gorgeous, I need her!" option because, honestly, it’s the only one that sounds sufficiently sarcastic...

At first, I didn't even realize what was actually going on—and I'm sure plenty of others were just as lost as I was. But after this stunt? Pretty much everyone is going to start blocking ads. I mean, if they don't start charging us specifically for using an adblocker, there won't be much left to block anyway. 🙂
Suggestion: Can we make avatars larger? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I honestly don't get the whole obsession with signature formatting... it feels like a lot of unnecessary effort, if you ask me. As for the actual topic, though, I'd say 75x75 would be just fine enough.
Give it a shot and let me know how it goes 😉
Mostly I track everything through Last.fm, though I dip into YouTube occasionally, or just rely on various forums and the occasional recommendation from friends

And honestly, there’s always this endless mountain of new music I want to get through, but the clock is always ticking too fast...

Let's say human trafficking, groove
I haven't sat down to watch this groove yet, but based on how you described it, it sounds exactly like what you're hunting for...
And honestly, I can't even wrap my head around the title of that one movie right now.
Question? in Miscellaneous ·
hollowpilot862 said:Hey everyone.

I am. It’s done. Finally. Finished school last year, finally got my certification as a mechanical computer technician, and honestly? I’ve spent more time than I care to admit scouring various job boards lately, only to find absolutely nothing that matches what I actually trained for. It’s a bit of a dead end. So, naturally, I’ve started casting a wider net and looking into other fields entirely. Just one of those things, I suppose.

I was scrolling through a few job postings for call center positions earlier today, and I saw this...

"It’s funny, isn't it? How we talk about "IT skills" like they're some kind of static trophy you just pick up and put on a shelf. People walk around thinking that knowing how to navigate an interface or troubleshoot a printer constitutes actual technical literacy. It doesn't. Not really. I was sitting in a coffee shop in Seattle the other day—just watching the rain hit the window, minding my own business—and I overheard this kid bragging about his "advanced digital proficiency." He was talking about Excel formulas as if he’d cracked the Enigma code. It made me want to sigh, deeply. We live in an era where everyone is a "user," but very few people actually understand the machinery underneath the hood. True technical knowledge... it's more than just clicking buttons in the right order. It's about understanding logic. It's about grasping how data flows through a system without getting lost in the plumbing. Most people just want the magic button that makes the problem go away. They don't want to know why the button works, and frankly, they don't care. But when the system inevitably breaks—and it always does—they look around for someone who actually understands the architecture, not just someone who knows how to reboot. There's a certain cynicism that comes with actually knowing how things work. You start seeing the cracks in everything. You see the shoddy logic in the software, the messy shortcuts taken by developers, and the sheer fragility of the systems we rely on for every single aspect of our lives. It’s exhausting, honestly. You spend half your time fixing things that shouldn't have broken in the first place because someone decided a "quick fix" was better than doing it right the first time. But I suppose that's just the way it goes. Knowledge is a heavy thing to carry sometimes."Advanced computer literacy required." That’s the phrase they always throw at you, isn't it? It sounds so clean on paper. So professional. But we all know what that actually means in practice. It’s never just about knowing how to navigate a file directory or sending an email without accidentally attaching your entire life story. No, when a job posting like this pops up, they're usually looking for someone who can troubleshoot a server meltdown at 3:00 AM while simultaneously explaining to a manager why the cloud isn't "broken," it's just being temperamental. I remember back when I was working a similar gig over in Chicago—nothing fancy, just a mid-sized firm—and they used this exact wording. They thought they were hiring a specialist, but what they actually needed was a digital exorcist. You spend half your day fixing things that shouldn't have broken in the first place and the other half wondering why we ever moved away from paper ledgers. It’s a bit of a cynical cycle, really. You gain the "advanced knowledge" they demand, only to realize the "advanced" part mostly involves knowing which specific button to press to make the screaming stop.

So, I’ve been sitting here wondering... how am I actually supposed to gauge what "advanced computer literacy" even means? It’s one of those vague terms they throw around in job descriptions to see if you'll blink. Personally, I’ve been living behind a screen for about eight years now. I can navigate a PC, sure. I know my way around the OS, I can troubleshoot the usual headaches, and I don't panic when a window freezes. But is that enough? Or is there some invisible threshold of expertise I'm missing? It feels like the goalposts are always moving.

Could someone please walk me through this? I’m a bit lost. 🙏 Thanks! 🙏

🙏 You certainly went ahead and finished that one, didn't you?
