Here are a few examples of movies where the trailers were total lies, just plain bad, or unfairly pumped me up;

Bridesmaids (2011) - such a notorious one. The trailer promised a non-stop riot, basically a better, female-led version of The Hangover.
Aside from one genuinely hilarious scene, we just got a slow-paced comedy-drama.

Real Steel (2011) - maybe an even worse offender. It looked like a high-octane action flick set in the near future, packed with robot fights.
Nobody told me we were getting some kid as the lead instead of someone like Wolverine.😂

Super 8 (2010) - based on the trailer, I was expecting a legit sci-fi horror, but what we got was a much lighter "kids movie" vibe that felt pretty underwhelming.

Thinking back to other movies that pop into my head (no need to link the trailers for these), I remember being super disappointed with Hancock. I was expecting an action-comedy, but it was anything but that.

On the flip side, for Wolf of Wall Street, I was expecting mindless fun or some flashy TV commercial type of movie, but I ended up getting the best film of the year.

That being said, this is actually a positive example of a misleading trailer. 😁
It’s way BETTER that the movie turned out to be what it actually is (honestly one of the best films of 2011!) rather than some cheap, watered-down female version of The Hangover. 🙂

I’m really digging this movie. It’s a textbook example of that "new French extremism" wave, and honestly, it’s way darker than the rest of them (well, if you count the ending). There’s this one weird thing in the film that feels like it isn't even explained—or maybe it doesn't even need to be—that whole zombie bit, you know? But whatever, it's fine. Just brutal, uncomfortable, and totally caught me off guard 🙂

Even though the movie is directed with such anatomical precision—it's weird, super interesting, and honestly pretty original—I don't know... I still find myself leaning more towards the others. Comparing this thing to Twilight is definitely a reach. This isn't some pretentious teen dream; it’s more like a hilarious romp in the vein of Shaun of the Dead 😁

By the way, the sound that truck makes when it finally "dies" is basically identical to the roar you get from the T-Rex in Jurassic Park or that shark in Jaws 😁

Regarding the runtime:

NPR probably aired the stripped-down American TV cut rather than the full theatrical version.

Anyway, as far as the movie goes, I thought it was killer. Super minimalist, but it hits hard... In those early days, Spielberg was basically a mini Hitchcock on the open road 😁

Premium Rush

It's a pretty recent movie that totally slipped under my radar (I don't even know if this actually got a wide release here in the States?) where JGL plays some guy on a bike working for a high-speed delivery outfit in New York City.
One day he gets stuck with this urgent package, and he's desperately trying to deliver it while some psycho played by Michael Shannon (who else would play a guy like that?) is basically trying to kill him just to get his hands on that crap inside JGL's bag.

The plot is pretty minimalist, featuring energetic editing and directing that occasionally feels similar to Run Lola Run (you know, switching from bird's-eye views to dolly shots and stuff). When there's actually a break in the roadside chaos, it's either some manic dialogue from Shannon or a video game-style breakdown of the action (like JGL is visualizing possible routes in his head and it shows up on screen as a graphic analysis).

So it doesn't come off as a total brainless flick (which wouldn't have been all bad, honestly), the story is chopped up into segments and told non-chronologically. You can easily get lost halfway through because of that, but luckily the story isn't super complex, so you catch up pretty fast by the end.

Anyway, fast pace, killer cinematography, awesome chase scenes through the streets, a totally unhinged Shannon, and a slightly goofy concept overall.
Basically a total blast. Good.

Honestly, the original was pretty crappy to me too; I mean, sure, the special effects were killer and the lead guy was actually kind of likable at times, but the rest of it? Total garbage 😁

And does anyone recall the original 1980 Jack the Ripper movie, you know, the one about that super creepy guy who scalps beautiful women?



It feels like Luke/Elijah/Frodo has always struggled with some serious trauma—between losing his dads, dealing with the chaos of Middle-earth, unhinged relatives and all those other messy situations. Because in this new remake of Jack the Ripper, he’s doing some absolutely DECONTAMINANT stuff 😁
