Schizophrenia - General Discussion in Psychology & Therapy ·
Nicole Barrett76 said:Is there any way for those of us living with schizophrenia to access experimental alternative therapies based on dietary supplements through some kind of advocacy group or non-profit?

I am specifically thinking about B-complex vitamins, Vitamin C, EPA/DHA fatty acids, and zinc (to facilitate successful methylation, which allows for the effective integration of B-complex vitamins into other substances).

For instance, imagine using a B-complex where each capsule contains 200mg of the primary vitamins. If one were to take eight such capsules, they would receive 1600mg each of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6, combined with 1500mg of riboflavin and 3000mg of sodium ascorbate powder (a non-acidic form of Vitamin C chemically bonded with sodium).

Now... one can't help but shudder when looking at the cost of such a regimen, but then again, certain antipsychotics can run you three thousand dollars. Wouldn't it be more logical to attempt the aforementioned nutritional therapy first, and then, working closely with psychiatrists, gradually taper off the antipsychotic dosage?

Perhaps even psychiatrists might be open to this if they could see that patients are consistently receiving the necessary levels of these nutrients and adhering to the regimen regularly.

Such high doses of B vitamins naturally boost energy levels; imagine how much more vitality we would have—and how much less we would need to sleep—if we could reduce our antipsychotic doses by even a third or a quarter.

No psychiatrist in their right mind would agree to this, nor would they ever swap out an antipsychotic for vitamins, minerals, and Omega.

The movie was just stupid and repulsive. Truly. Honestly, why on earth did I feel compelled to sit through this? I probably would have been better off just doing the laundry or something equally productive...

Edward Cox said:I’d love to hear what you all think about this:
So, I was over at my mom's place for lunch this past weekend. On Sunday, she mentioned feeling a bit run down and said she had a slight fever, maybe around 98.6°F. We didn't have much physical contact over those two days, but I decided it would be best to just self-isolate for a few days once I got back home, just until she can get tested. Talking to her and my brother who lives there, though... it seems they aren't planning on being super strict about isolating. They have a dog that needs walks, so they want to head out... On Monday, Mom called her doctor, and the advice was basically to just wait a few more days and see if symptoms get worse, but the doctor didn't actually recommend isolation. So, my question is really:
Do you think the doctor was being reckless here? And is this something that should be reported? Looking at how this specific situation went down, it feels like if a lot of people don't take potential illnesses seriously enough, it puts everyone else at risk. Not to mention my own family... they're avoiding crowds, sure, but they're still potentially spreading things... Honestly, I'm just feeling pretty frustrated and worried...

The doctor is the one who determines if testing is necessary, not a family member.
And you can still walk your dog while in isolation. An epidemiologist told a colleague of mine that. You just put on a mask and head out for a few minutes to somewhere where there aren't any people around.

Stowaway (2021) in Movies ·
bluehawk said:The technical side—and any logical inconsistencies there—doesn't really matter in this movie, because the whole thing is essentially a metaphor for illegal immigration, which is pretty obvious from the title itself. The stowaway, in this specific instance, is a Black man who ends up on the ship illegally; he’s seriously injured and needs urgent medical attention. Later, we find out he doesn't quite remember how he got on board, that he grew up under harsh circumstances (fire burns, losing parents, etc.), and that he's looking after his younger sister on his own. The crew members are somewhat suspicious at first (checking to see if he's dangerous), but they eventually accept him kindly and provide help, agreeing that he didn't mean to be there—that he just ended up this way. Once he recovers, the immigrant thanks the crew for saving him and emphasizes that he doesn't want to be a burden and learns quickly. Even though the engineer agrees there isn't a job for him on the ship, the biologist takes pity on him and assigns him some data entry—what you might call a menial job in English. So, the comparison to migrants is more than apparent. Given the level of woke elements—in terms of the now somewhat standardized role-swapping—women are the leads (one is the pilot and commander, another is strong, proactive, and the one who sacrifices herself for the greater good, while the men are weak or useless, the biologist gets sick, isn't great at climbing, etc.). You might think the director would take a pro-immigrant stance. However, the film actually (perhaps unintentionally) carries a strong anti-immigrant message. From the moment he appears, the migrant is the source of the problems. First, he damages the oxygen supply/air purifier, then he incapacitates the female pilot (by falling on her hand), then the biologist, while searching for an alternative oxygen source, destroys the algae needed for research, and finally, the doctor—the other scientist—sacrifices herself for him. In short, the migrant's mere presence puts the crew in mortal danger and drains resources, yet despite his intentions, he doesn't really contribute anything significant. The epilogue is this: the pilot is incapacitated for a time, one scientist is left without research materials, another scientist is dead, and the mission has failed. The immigrant is technically saved, but one has to wonder: at what cost?

Based on that description, if I were running the ship, I'd have tossed him out the airlock and said bye-bye.
Now that I've read the whole plot, I don't even feel like watching it...
Shaving vs. Buzzing: Which one is better? in Psychology ·
Amy Kelly said:I think some of you missed my point—I really don't care about someone's "hairstyle"

Personally, I couldn't care less what someone looks like on the outside, and I’m certainly not here to judge anyone; what matters to me is what they have going on "under the hood"😁

Rather than focusing on that "act"

So, what kind of "act" was it? Was he doing it at home in front of a mirror or at a barbershop? Or was he just standing there in the middle of the street shaving his head?

Amy Kelly said:Should you be worried if someone shaves their head?

She’s always had "normal" hairstyles, then suddenly—buzz cut down to the skin.

Male, younger guy.

I read somewhere that this can sometimes be a "cry for help."

And what exactly is "abnormal" about that?
If they went out and tattooed their entire face, then maybe we'd have something to worry about.

I watched it. Given how much everything has been going on lately with the pandemic, I’d say it was alright—fairly decent, actually. It was entertaining enough. I have to say, though, the soundtrack really stood out to me; those songs used to drive the plot along were quite good.

Dealing with the teenage years is a nightmare in Students & Teens ·
Whether I’m out on my rollers or just riding my bike, I usually spend my time circling Central Park with the crew. We do some badminton, ping pong, maybe even some volleyball in the park—it's a whole thing. But honestly, none of that really compares to a structured, coached training session. I’ve been looking at the forecast, and it looks like they’re predicting rain again for next week, which means trying to do training online is... well, it's kind of a joke, I guess.

I'm just happy she's reading something. Trying to get her to pick up a book otherwise is pure science fiction.
That seems to be the trend lately.🤔

I know she watched that recent anime series about those guys on skateboards, so we ended up having to buy a skateboard.😵
Before that, it was all about Hunter x hunter.

My little one has been obsessed with skating lately, too; she’s actually getting pretty good at it, surprisingly.
So, there’s your reason right there.

School Reform: Thoughts? in Students & Teens ·
I mean, most kids—and their parents, too—still seem to be obsessed with aiming for prep schools. But honestly? Those four-year tracks involve learning a massive amount of fluff. It’s fine, I guess, for students who are totally lost after middle school and have no clue what they want to do—or, in my case, at least knowing what I definitely *don't* want to do. That's a start, I suppose.
But if you already know you want to pursue something like Mechanical Engineering, in my opinion, it makes way more sense to go to a technical vocational school. Why bother wasting time on history, music, art, or psychology...

My daughter just hit thirteen. We’re all exhausting and difficult now. I’ve even gone full old-school.🙄

She listens to music that's an absolute disaster. It sounds like a funeral procession. I can't even put a genre to it. I used to think there wasn't a song out there I couldn't stand, but apparently, I was wrong.☕

Everything she wears is oversized; if it isn't baggy, she won't touch it.
She spends her life glued to TikTok, acting like she hates the entire world.
And don't expect any affection. No hugs, no kisses—you can barely even touch her without getting a glare.

In short...

As for the music, I won't even go there. Sure, she knows all the hits from the Top 40 stations, but then she’ll pull up some stuff on YouTube in Japanese or Russian. It’s terrible, really. Though, I suppose at least it isn't country music.
And she’s always watching anime or reading manga. I still don't quite get it—I don't understand the appeal or what the themes are actually about. I know it can get a little freaky sometimes.

Jason Ortiz5 said:Every single one of these hormone-driven terrors has their own little way of doing things. But at the end of the day, the result for us is the same—total frustration and a desperate urge to trade the kids in for Golden Retrievers on Craigslist. 😁

People say they'll grow out of it (honestly, if anyone else took them in, they'd probably send them right back and ask for a refund for the emotional trauma 😬). I guess someone had to put up with us, too. At least life is never boring. 😍

Try to take it with a grain of salt and find some humor in it. Believe me, I know it's easier said than done. 🙂

Yeah, true. But then again, I end up forgiving everything the second she runs up to me after I get home from work, gives me a hug, and tells me she loves me "to the moon and back"—and she didn't even ask for anything, not even a cent.

I wasn't aware about that regarding Taj Holland, but honestly—what are they even doing acting in those absolute garbage movies? It's almost like they can't find steady work elsewhere... I guess.
The other day I was watching some horror flick starring Bruce Willis where he’s wearing some sort of robotic suit—some alien nonsense, I suppose.
Then there was this other piece of cinematic trash featuring Salma Hayek and Owen Wilson; I couldn't make heads or tails of it—couldn't tell what was a hallucination and what was actually happening.
They just keep taking roles in these bottom-of-the-barrel productions... I assume they all need the paycheck, I guess... Who knows...

So, how are you guys handling the whole puberty madness? Like, how are they actually coping with all of it?
My kid is turning 13 soon, and let me tell you, the hormones are hitting full force right now. It’s honestly tough to tell how much of this is just biological chaos versus how much is caused by everything else going on in the world—that classic "I hate my parents, I hate myself, and I hate the entire universe" vibe. One minute I’m ready to just give them a huge hug, and the next, looking at the state of things... I mean, school being back to hybrid or online stuff, sports practices basically being non-existent unless the stars align perfectly, and then there's the endless cycle of eating, lounging around, complaining, and scrolling through TikTok on that "educational" tablet she's always glued to...

Good grief, it’s like reading about my own kid—she's 12. Same exact thing. Just more eye-rolling, pale skin, and TikTok is her entire religion. Then, every once in a while at night, she'll have this random moment where she actually wants to be affectionate and vent to me about the "drama" of her teenage life.

I’ve been scouring the web for an answer, but honestly? I'm coming up completely empty-handed.

Self-isolation is something you carry out at your home or apartment—it isn't something you do at the border crossing or a Greyhound station. So, obviously, you have to be able to get to your final destination so you can actually isolate yourself. The real issue isn't how you get from the border to your house via bus; it's whether you can avoid stopping at a diner, a grocery store, or a friend's place along the way. That's where people trip up.
