Lolita (1962) in Movies ·
gentlepuma20 said:You just can't escape comparing it to the book when you're dealing with one of the greatest novels ever written. I guess Kubrick's mistake was even attempting to adapt something like this in the first place. It’s not even that translating the novel into a screenplay is a true art form—given the subject matter and the censorship issues—it’s just... well, it seems impossible to do right because the prose is so layered. There's too much linguistic play; the book is really the only medium where Lolita actually feels right. 🙂
There's that scene near the beginning where Humbert accidentally touches Lolita's hand. In the book, that moment is described perfectly—the details, how he feels, her reaction, the tension in the air—it's incredible. In the movie, the scene lasts about a second—they touch, they share a weird look, she walks away. That's why the film doesn't quite hit the mark for me—Lolita is such an amazing novel because of those tiny, internal moments, not because of the plot itself. And that’s what gets lost in the film.

Exactly!
Whether it's the description of her knees or that phase where she's transitioning from a girl into a young woman—how her body changes and she becomes someone else entirely... I remember going back to those passages several times just to soak them in.
The movie is visually striking in its own way, sure, but it doesn't offer what the book provides.
Pap smear test in Health ·
Angela Wright said:Honestly, I don't think the issue lies with the Pap smear analysis itself—you have to get that done the same day, otherwise, the sample just goes bad. The real bottleneck is how they handle the results. It feels like they’re cutting corners by waiting to bundle all the finished reports together just to send them out once a month. If I remember correctly, this is all funded through the monthly lump sum the clinic receives from Medicare, which covers basically every single supply and tool used in the facility. So, my guess? This kind of penny-pinching varies wildly from one clinic to the next.🤷

Which is exactly why I don't feel a single ounce of guilt spending my hard-earned dollars on a private gynecologist. 🙂
Quick question... :D in Health ·
goldenbison142 said:Hey... I'm Maya... and I have a question.. 😢
I've used cocaine several times lately... but I'm planning to get pregnant this June... so I'm wondering how long it stays in my blood... or just in my system in general... specifically regarding the baby's health?
How much time do I and my partner need to detox so we can be sure we're clean?
Thanks in advance... you guys have an awesome forum—a friend from Chicago recommended it to me!
Best!

If you’re actually planning on getting pregnant, start by booking an appointment with a gynecologist for a checkup and some professional advice. And honestly, it isn't just the cocaine that's bad for the fetus—it's about living healthy overall (diet, exercise, staying away from other vices, etc.)

Angela Wright said:I actually ended up paying out of pocket for extra insurance because I couldn't stand the waiting games, and honestly, now everything is moving so much faster. I’m getting all the exams done through private providers instead. My dad will be cleared in about a week, but you have to be proactive—you need to call them yourself to check on his status, and if you want, they can just mail the results straight to your house. When I was dealing with Social Security, the wait felt even longer (like a full month), but back then, if there was ever an issue with the paperwork, the caseworker would always give me a call the second they received the files.

I had no idea the wait for a social worker or a public doctor was actually that bad. 😲
Retroverted uterus: What to expect? in Women's Health ·
Carol Ramirez said:I didn't want to start a whole new thread, so I'm just jumping in here.
Has anyone else had a gynecologist tell them they have a small uterus? Mine measured it—very precisely, mind you—and said it’s just a hair under the "normal" threshold. He also mentioned there's no need to panic yet. So... should I be panicking?

Well, mine is both small and tilted. 😛
I asked if I should be worried or if having kids is even an option. My doctor told me that in my specific case, there might be a slightly higher risk of miscarriage, but as far as a standard pregnancy goes, everything looks fine.👍
Kate Cox2 said:It hurts less, sure—but now there’s still a 1.5-2 cm gap right in the middle of my slit.
I'm honestly terrified of even brushing my hair... I'm just gonna go take a dip in the ocean today and hope the salt water does some magic.

Look, you'll be fine. It'll heal.
Just don't go doing any headstands or anything stupidly risky. 😁
Kate Cox2 said:It happens to me every once in a while at some fancy bank where they keep the glass so spotless you can't tell if there's an actual door there or just open space...

Oh, tell me about it! I’ve walked straight into a glass door twice—and both times it was at the exact same Chase branch. I honestly thought it was one of those automatic doors that had already slid open.😬

Anyway, how’s everyone’s head feeling today?
That was likely breakthrough bleeding—there are honestly a dozen different reasons why that happens. Maybe a hormonal imbalance?

Look, weird discharge isn't exactly winning any awards for "good news." Either way, any OB-GYN is just going to be guessing until they actually get you in for an exam, so you really need to go see a doctor.

Sure, that'll soothe the skin and dry up a pimple in an awkward place.

If you're actually breaking out from sweat, just powder your butt—preventatively, obviously.👍
Anyone else having issues with their AC? in Health ·
Back at my old apartment, I had AC installed—because let’s be honest, without it, I wouldn't have survived the summer, given how the sun just beats down on those south-facing windows all day long. No issues there.

But now? The air at work absolutely nukes my skin. It’s incredibly drying, which is infuriating since we’re constantly toggling between blasting the heat and freezing ourselves out.👎

Then there’s the public transit situation. They tend to crank the AC way too high, and after a long haul—say, a six-hour commute—I always end up coming down with a cold.

I really think these units need regular maintenance, and once they're running, people actually need to set them to a reasonable temperature.

Anonymous said:When I smoke at night, waking up the next morning is a total struggle. How can I dodge that morning brain fog and exhaustion? I need to actually be sharp and productive when I get to work.

Look, there isn't some magic cure for that morning haze. Honestly—your best bet is just to save the smoking for the weekend.😉
Mom, she’s definitely talking about those Speculaas cookies—the ones with the cinnamon kick.
They’re basically the go-to snack whenever you're grabbing a coffee or tea. You can pick up a pack at any Walmart.

Angela Reyes3 said:Oh, what an absolute nightmare 🙄
A third of my hair had already turned gray by the time I was seventeen, and since then, it’s just been a non-stop accumulation—and the worst part is, I don't even dye it, and I'm a woman!

So why aren't you dyeing it? 😕

🤣 🤣 🤣
We aren't quite at that stage yet—but honestly, we'll probably get there in ten years, maybe even sooner.🤔
The thing is, you know how some people just have such a massive ego that no amount of rebranding can fix it. They're basically unfixable. Zero impact. Maybe Angela Merkel is one of those types.😬

The other day I was venting to two guys at work—one’s 29 and the other is 30.

The oldest one (30) is practically balding already, and the 29-year-old is halfway there.
Is this some kind of glitch in my system, or is it just temporary? I guess.

Now they won't stop messing with me, saying I'll look just like them in two years😲 , which honestly has me feeling pretty depressed.
I mean, seriously, I just started getting my life together, finally got my finances sorted, and now I'm already an old man.

God help me.😕 😕

Only three?!
I found my first one when I was 17!😲 I spent years trying to pluck it, but that thing was stubborn. Then during college, a few more popped up, and once I started working? Ugh, don't even get me started. I have no idea what I'd look like if I wasn't dyeing my hair every couple of weeks. I actually don't want to know.:zubo
How to treat a sprained ankle? in Health ·
Honestly, just let it heal on its own. Don't go poking at it or trying to pop anything.
It’s way better to just wear some comfortable shoes—nothing that pinches the blister—or even better, just throw on some flip-flops, sandals, or slippers. Whatever works. The skin heals a hell of a lot faster when you actually let it breathe.
Cleaning tips? in Health ·
Jonathan Ruiz10 said:Thanks, everyone. I’m feeling absolutely terrible right now. And to make matters worse, I'm still ten days out from my period—which usually means I'm dealing with major bloating and water retention.
Anyway, I've decided today is the day for a total reset: lots of raw fruits and veggies, no processed junk, plenty of water, some sparkling mineral water, and maybe some kefir... hopefully, that'll help me feel human again in a day or two.🙏

Don't go overboard with all that fruit and veg—believe it or not, even the healthy stuff can make you bloat if you overdo it. Just keep it moderate. Honestly, a little bit of activated charcoal should clear you right out—just make sure you take it on an empty stomach and drink it lukewarm. Good luck!
Swelling in the groin area?! in Health ·
Susan Carter3 said:Actually, saying it was "just a little puffy" is a massive understatement on my part. It became significantly swollen and flushed within about two hours of everything happening...

Well, sounds like you had quite the wild ride there.😉
Look, it's fine. Don't sweat it.

Susan Carter3 said:Has anyone else ever experienced significant swelling of the genitals during intercourse?
I’m being completely serious here, not looking for jokes or trolling.
It’s happened to me twice now with my long-term partner. It wasn't just a little bit of sensitivity; the swelling was quite substantial and very noticeable.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?😲

Look, it's totally normal for things to swell up a bit from intense stimulation. Especially if you have a massive buildup during foreplay followed by the actual act...
I'm just not sure if I follow—are we talking about localized swelling in one specific spot, or is everything just generally inflamed?
Hannah Allen86 said:It’s totally normal—it's what people call "spring fatigue." I'm feeling absolutely useless lately, too. Instead of actually doing something productive—like, I don't know, going for a walk while the weather is actually decent and just enjoying the outdoors—I'm just stuck inside staring at the TV because I have zero motivation. 😬

Magnesium helps. Get the effervescent tablets. 👍
One a day is plenty; even if you overdo it, your body just flushes the excess out through your urine.😁
