Is it too early to say this was easily one of the greatest shows I've ever laid eyes on? Because honestly, I think it might be true! 🙂
The logistics were actually super impressive—especially considering how unconventional the venue was—and the sound quality was pretty solid, even if it wasn't totally perfect. At first, Nelson’s guitar felt a little buried when it really needed to shine, which meant "Art of Almost" didn't hit quite as hard as it does on the record, but things leveled out quickly—and then "Impossible Germany" absolutely crushed it, just like you'd expect! 🙏 They tore through more than half of the Yankee album, including "Radio Cure" and "War on War." 😍 And man, there was this huge crowd of people shouting "I am trying to break your heart" way too loudly at the wrong times! 😍 The end of the main set, featuring "SOMETHING IN MY VEINS BLOODIER THAN BLOOD," 😍 couldn't have gone better. Then came the longest encore ever! It kicked off with a repetitive version of "Via Chicago"—which the drummer spiced up with these intense, nervous outbursts—😁, followed by the title track "Whole Love," and then a massive run of older hits, mostly from *Being There* and *Box Full of Letters*. The energy was infectious; everyone was singing along, and even the folks jumping around near me—and believe me, there were some quiet types nearby—were totally swept up in it. No talking, just pure music! 🙏 Wilco fans for the win! ♥
It wouldn't have been complete without them closing things out with "I'm a Wheel," though, let's be real, that's the only silly song they've got. 🤣
Thirty songs packed into two and a half unforgettable hours! 🙂

Edward Davis11. Honestly, I was totally over the Budweiser at that massive concert out at Santa Monica—it just wasn't my vibe! I hadn't really caught up on any of their newer stuff, and I wasn't exactly keeping up with the old classics either, but I kept thinking, "Hey, why don't they play something romantic?" You know, something soft, intimate, maybe even a little sterile? And then, of course, I'm standing there and they perform exactly those kinds of songs (especially Planet 🤮 )! Anyway, Edward Davis11 hasn't really listened to much since the Maxon era, but honestly, I still think they're worth seeing live! 🙂
It’s honestly wild—you can't even get through a single concert review without running into a massive wall of people going, "Ugh, I remember when hunting for vinyl was such a struggle, and finding a rare record felt like winning the lottery! But now that everything is just a click away, music doesn't have any soul left, so it's all trash nowadays." 😢 🤮 It’s just constant! And on top of that, you barely read anything actually useful about the show itself or the music from the bands that were on stage 🤷
I’ve already tossed a few people onto my ignore list, but can you actually imagine someone writing a dedication IN A BOOK instead of just somewhere inside? 🙏
It’s honestly so weird reading about a billion minor things that don't even matter, while the one thing that actually ruins everything gets ignored— the terrible sound mixing 👎 I truly believe the attitude toward local bands has always been pretty subpar 👎, though it feels like things have finally turned around for international acts (since apparently, there was some hate back in the day, maybe around 2007? edit: or maybe someone was just being a hater then) considering we're getting 🙂Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival back!

I was just chatting about this with some buddies of mine—and our consensus was a hard no! The reason? It’s those weirdos who will only ever drink one single beer, no matter how much it costs 😢
TV on the Radio—even with the absolute worst sound system ever (the bass was way too loud and everything else was just a mess :S)—for the first few songs I honestly had no clue what I was even listening to 😕 (but by the time they played I'm scared to death that I'm living a life not worth dying for, things were finally starting to feel alright) they totally blew the roof off! It was hands down the best performance ever 🙏 🙂 they actually managed to get even the crowd that looked bored at the start moving a bit (though, granted, I'm a white guy who can't dance, so take my definition of "moving" with a grain of salt 😬) Honestly, I could sign off on pretty much everything Gregory Harris8 wrote about the second day. I didn't make it to Elemental because I ended up catching some Rage Against the Machine instead—they really know how to work a crowd, even if that kind of vibe isn't quite my thing. But after seeing the unexpectedly awesome The Streets (man, those bold Brits sure know how to deliver 🙏), I easily managed to fight my way right to the front for Grinderman. Cave is clearly giving it his all, but it felt totally lackluster, and then they topped it off by playing No Pussy blues, which is probably the least convincing song ever written. Maybe I'm just unrefined, but can he seriously not own the stage? 🤣 Plus, I'm not usually big on that rock/punk blues stuff (except for The Black Keys and Gun Club), so...
Sadly missed Mastodon for 😢, caught a little bit of Cypress Hill, though they were boring as hell until that one good beat kicked in

wrote this last night but my internet totally died on me, so here’s my recap of day one: I had such an absolute blast seeing Arcade Fire! I rushed in right during Ready to start ali and managed to push my way all the way to the front—though I did knock over a few people in the process, since there was a massive crowd of folks who weren't even really there for them. But honestly, almost everyone just brushed it off and got back up, and the vibe in the crowd stayed incredibly beautiful. As for Arcade Fire, they were phenomenal! I mean, you just can't replicate everything from the albums live without a huge ensemble of musicians (and plenty of ego 😁), true. Yeah, the sound quality was pretty weak (which, if I'm being honest, felt like the same issue I had at the main stage last year), but if you're sitting there overanalyzing the audio during Power out, Rebellion ( Lies, no Cars go, or Wake up, then you're basically soulless 😛 (or maybe you just stood way too far back 😬))
Aside from those anthems, the most unforgettable moment was when they played Well, some things are pure and some things are right But the kids are still standing with their arms folded tight BECAUSE THAT WAS LITERALLY HAPPENING RIGHT IN FRONT OF US, YOU KNOW?! 🙂
Regine is just so sweet when she takes center stage, and while Win tries really hard to be the star—which is kind of charming in its own way—it feels like they don't even need to try that hard 🤷
And now I finally get why they (alongside National and all those other amazing indie bands) blew up so much—the reason is OOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO in every third song 😬 (Oh, and that was easily the worst singalong ever; honestly, it might have been better if they hadn't done it at all 😁)
The set was actually pretty decent overall; the lead singer has such a stunning voice, and they even did a cover of Tightrope by Janelle Monsa Đamirokvaj 😍
Đamirokvaj was playing in the background during the hangout, and it didn't seem nearly as terrible as I remember it being 😬
So, yeah, Arcade Fire was great, but it really reminded me why I both love and hate these massive festivals. By the way, isn't it just plain stupid that they can't assign more staff to handle the wristbands on day one, and then even fewer on day two? It ends up being the same amount of work for them even though the crowds are smaller 🤷
Out of those seven massive names they announced, five of them are playing on day two—honestly, you can only really catch two of them if you want to actually enjoy the music! 👎 😢 I actually shot them an email because this whole Mastodon lineup before Overflow feels totally disjointed... people are saying it just fits the vibe Mastodon is going for, I guess? 🤷
As for the day one headliner, Arcade Fire got the longest slot (2 hours and 15 minutes, which probably means they'll actually play for about an hour and 45 minutes), so that’s not a total letdown, even if it is weird why they aren't closing out the night 🤷

👍 That’s actually exactly what I was getting at! Even last year, hardly anyone had heard of Arcade Fire, yet they still managed to pull in 8 or 9 thousand people to their shows. 🙂 And besides, I don't see how it helps us all knowing who Billy Idol is, right? 😬
Honestly, seeing LCD Soundsystem would make me happy too—even if their new stuff didn't quite click for me personally—but I have my doubts. Not because I think the promoter is clueless (actually, looking at how they organize things compared to other festivals I've been to, I don't think that's the case; plus, the fact they pulled off The Flaming Lips' only mainland US tour last summer says a lot!), but more because I doubt they could swing a gig here just a day or two before they head to Israel. 🤷

Animal Collective were recently 🙂, and Explosions in the Sky are in the US during Coachella, so we are totally off-topic here, but EitS are clearly a much more snobby band 😛 (honestly, I'm curious where you see the snobbery in Animal Collective? From their interviews, they seem like totally down-to-earth people, and their music feels pretty straightforward too!) And even if "Let Me Back In" might be my favorite track of the year, we've all heard it by now, and let's be real—it's nowhere near "What Would I Want? Sky"😍
edit: forgot the biggest news, Arcade Fire has a new track featuring David Byrne, Speaking in Tongues, honestly, it totally hits the mark and stays right in line with what you'd expect from 😲 👍 !
