More like Hong Kong or Singapore, really.

I'm with amberfalcon172 on this qualitative judgment call.
Peckinpah - Convoy (Sam Peckinpah) in Movies ·
Peckinpah - Convoy (1978). Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw... It’s definitely not the peak of Sam Peckinpah's filmography, but it isn't half bad either.

So what, you think she just made up the whole middle chunk of the movie out of thin air?
Dawn of the Dead (2004) in Movies ·
I went into this one with pretty high hopes last night, but honestly, the satisfaction lasted about five minutes after those opening credits rolled—which were actually pretty slick, by the way. After that, it was just a slow slide into boredom; there were a few decent moments here and there, but the movie definitely doesn't live up to the hype Maddox built up in the trailer. I don't feel like I wasted an hour and a half of my life, per se, but when you’re dealing with this kind of vibe—that claustrophobic tension where everything outside is lethal—I'd recommend Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 about ten times over, and that flick doesn't even need a single zombie to pull it off. But hey, whatever.

There's already a remake of Assault scheduled for next year.
The Mary Magdalene Sisters in Movies ·
Hold up, we're talking about this movie? I think I saw it on TV or something, maybe on PBS, if I remember right. It was actually a decent flick.
Good Bye, Lenin! in Movies ·
The whole idea of deceiving someone "out of love" is just revolting, honestly; the social commentary feels about as deep as some middle schooler’s half-baked essay. The real kicker is how toward the end, the mother basically finds out what's actually going on, but because she’s so worn down by her son’s pathetic little stunts, she just plays along like his schemes are still working on her.

And you’re telling me, Robert Cooper41, that this movie sparked public controversy? Is any of that debate actually worth anything? If it were, we’d be cranking out cheap, tear-jerker movies about Warsaw, Ottawa, Ovčar, Ćuruvija, Stambolić, Đinđić, or "Mr. Legija" just to finally force everyone in this country to deal with those tragedies head-on.
The Flaming Lips in Music ·
When you look at how The Flaming Lips evolved, you have to realize that Steven Drozd joining the lineup changed everything about their sound. He’s basically the engine behind that entire new direction they took on The Soft Bulletin; most of those lush, heavy arrangements pretty much flowed straight from his head.

Look, if you actually sit down and listen to "in a bar Under The Sea," you’ll realize pretty quickly that the vibes lean heavily toward Beck or maybe Built to Spill. It’s not even about trying to distract the hardcore The Flaming Lips fans; it's just an observation. 😛It’s honestly vital that people give this band a listen; they’ve got that same kind of effortless charm you find in The Flaming Lips.
And you're still out here peddling that same old crap... ☕.

Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvian together on World Citizen [ Short version ] is just perfection.

I'm not really feeling In a Priest Driven Ambulance (that double release) that much, and those earlier tracks before hit to Death were just okay for me.. but I'm still hunting for Zaireek!😉 🙂

It's like you aren't even selling the stuff you claim to be selling.

In A Priest Driven is actually a total masterpiece. So, definitely a four😛

also dEUS - Fell OFF The floor, man. Highly recommended if you dig The Flaming L. or similar vibes.

The Last Temptation of Christ in Movies ·
Back in the day, this movie stirred up about as much controversy as The Passion of The Christ. In that one, they just keep beating Jesus Christ over and over—I haven’t actually sat through it myself, but I’ve heard enough stories to get the idea—which makes sense, I guess; but honestly, it's hard to imagine Gibson ever coming up with anything quite as provocative as this story where Jesus is just some carpenter building crosses for the Romans before he even starts preaching. It’s pretty wild how, much like in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, Satan ends up being the most interesting part of the whole thing.
Lynch's The Elephant Man in Movies ·
I'm starting this thread mostly because the acting in this flick is just straight-up fascinating. I’ve never been much of a fan of Hopkins, though I have to give him credit for his Nixon in that Stone's movie I caught late last night, but here he delivers this incredibly subtle, convincing, and delicate performance, and the women are just phenomenal; honestly, this is probably the only Lynch film where I actually found the acting more gripping than anything else about the whole thing.
Who are the biggest liars? in Music ·
PrittPen said:My bad to the OP, the mods, and you if this is getting on your nerves, so just feel free to scrub it.

At least it wasn't some newbie or some fifth-rate amateur cluttering up the thread.

Anyway, Liars. Finally, an intelligent, socially conscious punk record with actual teeth, feels like forever since Radiohead dropped Hail To The Thief.

My picks:

"We Fenced Other Houses With The Bones Of Our Own" is basically a lock for my most played track this month;

"There's Always Room On The Broom" is already looking like a heavy hitter for best song title of the year.

It's way too early to get deep into the end-of-year rankings, but if things play out where TWWSWD doesn't even crack my top 30, then 2004 is going to go down as one of those freakishly incredible years for music.

Edward Robinson6 said:calling Gold Against the soul an underdog is such a massive understatement🙄 and honestly, she’s got gems like sleepflower, from despair to where, life becoming..., all the way to that nostalgic pushead vibe😎

You could basically strip the whole thing down and call it a killer EP, but the second half of the album is filled with such absolute garbage that even someone as jaded as me finds it hard to sit through.

I'll leave this particular take to someone with less refined taste than I have...

And hey, Robin Booth, since you're feeling generous, why don't you give us the lowdown on what enol actually is for the folks who aren't in the loop.

William Rodriguez36 said:I gotta admit, I never actually picked up any of the albums where Richey played.

I bet there's some track where he's just totally out of his mind too. He played.Jokes aside, The Holy Bible is hands down their best work, while Gold Against the Soul is easily their weakest. That said, every single one of their albums has some absolute gems on it. Once Richey stepped out to grab a pack of smokes, they didn't really lose their musical edge, but man, the songwriting took a massive hit. Just as a heads-up regarding those Ocean Spray lyrics, it actually wasn't Nicky or Richey who penned them—it was James Dean Bradfield, writing about losing a parent.

If you actually dug Ocean Spray, I’m thinking you might vibe with these other tracks too.

Motorcycle Emptiness (Generation T.)
Little Baby Nothing featuring Traka Lords (Isto)
Life Becoming a Landslide (GATS)
This Is Yesterday (THB)
Australia (EMG)
enol / Alone (Giveaway question: what is enol / Alone? Prize - a smiley from me)
This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
My Little Empire (TIMTTMY)
Last Painting (KYE)
...

Are all their tracks just Ocean Spray clones? Not even close. Honestly, they’re probably the most stylistically diverse band to ever exist. I don't necessarily claim the songs mentioned as my personal favorites either. But if you want some real advice—just go grab The Holy Bible and take it from there. Everything they do, even the stuff that might not immediately blow you away, will likely resonate once you have that foundation. It gives you the musical, lyrical, and pop-culture context needed to actually appreciate their more accessible work, so you won't be sitting there making silly comparisons between Ocean Spray and Lemon Tree.

And why on earth would everyone here actually bother showing up for a recording? (I’m pretty sure I’ve made that point enough times already.)

It’s not even a debate that the guy who took his own life was caught on film; what’s actually messed up is that his visitor—a little girl—was the one watching it.
