Dealing with a nasal voice (rhinitis) in Health ·
Taylor Robinson7 said:gotcha, thanks. do I need to grab a referral from my primary doctor first or how does the whole process work?

Just hit up your family doctor for a referral, then you can see the ENT specialist.

Good luck!

Go see an ENT.
That nasal tone you've got might just be some sinus polyps or maybe even enlarged adenoids, which is honestly pretty easy to fix.

45 years old, male, and pretty sure I’m the oldest guy on this board—at least for now.

Back in elementary school, I played some chess, though I wasn't exactly winning any trophies.

Spent my younger years dealing with a bit of alcohol and way too many cigarettes.

Picked up running about 12 years ago.
Since then, I've knocked out 16 marathons, around 50 half-marathons, and a ton of smaller races.
Three years back, I dove into swimming (did one marathon swim), mountain biking (hit a few MTB marathons, most recently one in a Small town in Ohio this past Sunday), and finally jumped into triathlons about two years ago.

As for what's next? My big goal is to gift myself an Ironman for my 50th birthday.

The only actual advice worth taking is just hitting up your primary care doctor, since they're the ones who'll actually tell you what the hell to do next.
Magnetic belt issues in Health ·
Yeah, everyone knows Topshop stuff is high-quality, effective, and pretty damn efficient. 🤦

You strengthen your knee by building up the muscles surrounding it to give it actual stability, not by slapping on some random creams or using magnets. Especially those magnetic gimmicks—🤦

And honestly, that right there is the heart of the issue.
It isn't about a shortage of ambulances (!) or medical crews.

The system just doesn't work—just like most government systems in this miserable country. ☕

melloworca6 said:Seriously, try reading my entire post before you decide to cherry-pick the one sentence that fits your narrative. 🙄 I never said anyone should storm an ER and start throwing punches. People are saying they called 911, no one showed up, and someone they love died because of it.

Look, sorry, but if my kid, my mom, my dad, my spouse, or my sibling died just because someone decided not to do their job, yeah, I’d probably crack some skulls too. Since our legal system is basically non-existent, isn't a little bit of fear the only way to actually get people to care about their own lives?

How many people have to die at the hands of certain individuals before we finally swap them out for someone competent?

And tell me, would you really be sitting there all calm and collected if your child died because some medic couldn't be bothered to send an ambulance for an hour?

Signed.
When I talked about dropping down to Neanderthal levels, I was strictly referring to the specific situation I described.
Let's be crystal clear: I'd act exactly the same way if the life of someone I love was on the line and the paramedics were busy messing around. In a moment like that, all social etiquette flies out the window and I turn into a beast fighting for my family's survival. And honestly, I'd love to see anyone try to mess with me then.

I'm not talking about showing up at the ER with a slight fever. 🤦

Yeah, it’s just that the media refuses to touch stories like this with a ten-foot pole.
It's not like we're talking about some trivial celebrity scandal or a minor fashion mishap here...

Filing a private lawsuit is honestly a joke, because by the time you actually make it through the legal backlog, it’ll be a case of "mission accomplished, but the patient's already dead."

Sadly, if you ask me, the only thing that actually works is dropping down to a Neanderthal level and just screaming and making threats...
Because at the end of the day, everyone is just looking out for their own skin.

And we should probably just fight our way through everything and start handing out punishments too. ....

Just bashing things with an object.
Right on the head.
Until people actually start acting right.

I honestly don't get why Americans have this weird tendency to act like sheep.
They step on us, squeeze us, torment us, rob us, and discriminate against us, yet we won't even make a peep.
That "just" government that’s supposed to protect the little guy from the whims of the rich and powerful? Yeah, it doesn't exist.
People go months without getting their paychecks, they just work and stay quiet while watching the boss buy yet another luxury SUV.

Has it ever crossed anyone's mind to just take a stick to the knees of some enforcer—and yeah, I mean any kind of enforcer, even those guys working in hospitals—when there's absolutely no way to get actual justice?!

Since we're already talking about "cases," let me throw one of my own into the mix.
A dear person in my family was diagnosed with breast cancer back in August of last year.
She was scheduled for surgery in September 2011!!!!!!!!
By then, the metastases would have spread everywhere, assuming she was even still alive.
Once we finally made enough noise, suddenly a slot "opened up" and she was operated on within three weeks.
After that, she had to do radiation therapy, which was supposed to start in November 2011.

Enough of that smart talk.

Basically, I'm 25 and I spend way too much time thinking about how, in a society like this, I’d probably just drop dead if things went south before anything else even happened. Whether it's from blood pressure or whatever, you could actually die... an ambulance wouldn't show up, people on the street would just assume I was drunk (I mean, maybe I am!?) and look the other way, and then the hospital would probably give me some totally wrong diagnosis anyway.
Yeah, I guess I just have terrible luck!!! Washington, D.C.!!!

Based on what I see around me and my own experiences, it feels like with a healthcare system like this—and no, it's not a lack of funding, it's just throwing money at all the wrong stuff—the easiest thing to do is just die immediately.
Why?
Because if you're just an "average" guy or a "nobody" (meaning you don't have connections or enough cash to grease some palms), the red tape and complications involved in getting treated are so bad that most people end up dying before they even get actual medical help—so, honestly, dying just makes life easier for the system.
Maybe it leaves more money to treat addicts, drunks, and those "VIP" classes of society.

Morgan Williams4 said:Maybe they were busy saving some kid's life during those 37 minutes? Honestly, I wouldn't call it incompetence—it's just a total lack of resources. When you're stretched that thin, you unfortunately end up having to play god and decide who gets saved and who doesn't.

Did they ask for their Social Security number and birth certificate too?
I doubt it...

Eric Wright29 said:If you were staring down ten emergencies with only one ambulance on the road, I bet all that high-minded philosophy would dry up pretty fast.

So, how exactly does "philosophizing" explain why an ambulance in Washington, D.C., stuck between two hospitals, managed to show up 37 minutes after someone actually died?
I mean, in 37 minutes, a decent driver could cruise from D.C. all the way to Savannah, let alone cover a few miles...
Honestly, I’m leaning towards the dispatcher being totally incompetent—or maybe just being blunt, they probably couldn't be bothered to leave a massive New Year's feast to go do their jobs.

Not trying to be a hater or anything, but sometimes you just have to stop looking for a shortcut when there isn't one...
Sure, they aren't exactly jumping to help you when you deal with Medicare—which isn't really the point anyway—but at least their methods and results are actually reliable...
I mean, if we aren't paying them for that, then what exactly are we even paying them for?

I’d really double down on that point.
At the end of the day, we’re all just recreational athletes playing various sports to feel better, stay healthy, get fit, or just blow off some steam.
So, shouldn't you be training in a way that actually makes you happy, with an intensity that doesn't crush you, surrounded by people you actually like?
Recreational sport should be about unwinding and having a blast, not becoming another chore or a source of stress.

You’re never actually going to shake them off. They'll spend months harassing you via mail and phone calls right after that little "specialized screening" (since when does a fancy machine magically prevent cancer?), all just to try and upsell you on their own overpriced products.
My mother-in-law ran into a similar scam...
The real quality of Cuban healthcare in Health ·
shadowhawk31 said:Oh look, more whining about low wages being the reason nobody wants to work... how original. ☕

Spot on.
Cubans deal with much lower paychecks, so you can see exactly how their healthcare system holds up.
Meanwhile, over here in the States, doctors aren't exactly struggling to make ends meet—even if they keep trying to complain about it—so we get to see what that kind of money does to our medical system.
Modern healthcare is basically just a playground for massive corporations looking to turn a quick buck by selling everything from overpriced meds to junk food.
