Do we really need both admins and moderators? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
hollowmason64 said:See, that’s where I start questioning things—we have a community here with thousands of active members, so are you seriously telling me it’s that much of a struggle to find maybe ten people to step up in a short timeframe? If they can't get their act together within a month, then just swap them 🤷
.

Look, we don't appoint moderators for just ten days; we bring people on for the long haul. Sure, if we realize we made a mistake immediately, we can pull someone off the team the very same day, but we really hate making a call if there's even a shadow of a doubt about the decision. And like I've mentioned a few times now: we hold our positions temporarily due to various technical and administrative requirements, not strictly for moderation duties. I don't want to keep going in circles with this, because it should be pretty obvious to everyone that we aren't here just to moderate—whereas moderators *are* specifically here for that role (and disclaimer: I am definitely not saying moderation is "just" anything; I truly respect the weight and responsibility involved). We aren't just moderators; we are administrators performing administrative tasks, which goes way beyond simple moderation.

Plus, finding a candidate who checks every single box, meets everyone's standards, and actually wants to take on the responsibility of moderating is a lot tougher than it might look on the surface.

hollowtrucker77 said:Shouldn't the superadmins be handling that?

Well, they actually do, at least for the PDF sections where that's needed. We're also aware that we're short on a supermoderator right now—we know it, and we're actively working on getting someone in place. For instance, Gastronomy doesn't have a supermod at the moment, and while bliss is covering for Zodiac, I'm mostly over there dealing with other things anyway. As for the Religion section, until some of the ongoing changes are finalized under the supermoderation of Stryker, mellowraven22 is helping out over on Off just to help manage reports until we can find some extra backup for Dimi.

Look, admins shouldn't be acting as moderators. The current admins were only set up with moderator permissions for certain technical reasons, not because they’re meant to be permanent mods. I already went over all of this with you in a different thread, so I really don't see why we need a whole new topic for this.

Adding to what Nicholas King quoted here:

rustydrifter10 said:But right now, while we're working on those PDF files where we've been installed, it's actually an admin responsibility. Part of that process involves us finding moderators who can step in and take over for us. Like I said before, we aren't just there to moderate; we have other administrative duties to handle too.

Trolling" should be a moderator-only term! in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Emily Sanchez90 said:I honestly think we should just ban the word "trolling" altogether and hand out a warning card whenever some random jerk uses it.
I mean, why? Because among the lowlifes online, that term has just spiraled way out of control lately...

That’s just not how we do things here.

To answer your question directly: the word "trolling" isn't banned, and there are no plans to change that.

And what’s the deal with the Senate discussion being moved into a different thread? That's a whole separate issue right there!

Could you please be a bit more specific? I'd love if you could walk me through exactly what you mean regarding this:

Why has stormybadger8 been dodging the conversation for seven days straight—maybe even longer?

Why did mistybear87, one of the two moderators over on the Formula 1 subreddit, just vanish without a trace? After what happened...
He called me out for only quoting specific parts of his post during our discussion. He’s actually labeling that kind of thing as "unacceptable behavior"—claiming that my selective quoting is what caused my partiality in the first place. Is that really how we're playing this?
In his very next post, he took sixteen sentences just to address a single sentence—specifically, the one contained within that link.
Are you implying that my character was part of what you were discussing? Though, as far as I can tell, psychology has absolutely nothing to do with this.

It seems like there aren't any regrets being voiced here—or perhaps even an apology? Calling me a "dimwitted idiot"? Really?.

Let’s be realistic. Let’s be honest. People with nothing to hide don't resort to silence to defend themselves.
And here, I’m just talking to myself. I'm the one searching for answers. I'm the one seeking explanations.
And I’m still waiting on answers or any kind of explanation.

The other side is just staying silent. Why is that? 😉

Look, the moderator has already laid out his decision very clearly several times now, and the supermoderator fully backs up his assessment. So, this whole idea that the other side is just sitting there in silence really doesn't hold any water. Honestly, I’m not sure why you feel the need to imply anything else is going on here.

Now, regarding this part:

Jason Campbell70 said:I just received a DM regarding my access being revoked from the Formula 1 section.

I have no intention or need to lie, so I am providing a screenshot of this official statement from the moderator as proof.

"Due to constant trolling, provoking users and moderators"
Constant trolling?

I have no active warnings for trolling, and in the last 180 days, I’ve received exactly one warning for trolling. That is easily verifiable by stormybadger8, and easily verifiable by any other moderator or administrator.

Therefore, knowing these facts, the claim of "constant trolling" clearly falls apart.

The second part of the explanation is, to put it mildly, even more ridiculous:

"and incessantly dragging out and dissecting every single warning and response within the Feedback and Appeals sections."

Is the Feedback section meant for appeals? It is.
Does the sub-header for the Feedback section say "Your suggestions, ideas, appeals, and comments. How to make this forum better and more civilized."? It does.
Is the Appeals section meant for contesting an unfair ban? It is.
Does the sub-header for the Appeals section say "Unfair ban? Appeal here"? It does.

What was I doing in those sections? Appealing warnings and bans. Is there anything wrong with that?

Yet, when I look at the list of editors for Feedback and Appeals, I only see a few names.
stormybadger8 isn't even on it.
Regarding my posts in the Feedback and Appeals sections, you are just as responsible as I am. The two of us are equal participants here, discussing the exact topics those sections were created for.

That is point one.

The second point—and the more important one—is this: by what rule or principle am I being penalized for the Formula 1 section based on my activity in two entirely different sub-forums?
And that activity was done strictly according to the intended purpose and description of those two sub-forums.

So, given these facts, it is obvious that the claim about "constantly dragging out and dissecting every warning and response in the Feedback and Appeals sections" also fails to hold water.

What is left?

You can't get penalized on one thread just because you're posting on another. I honestly think the moderators are reaching their limit trying to deal with you playing games on one thread and then coming over here to demand a play-by-play explanation for every single decision they make. Take this 350-point penalty, for example—it was already explained in the Ban Appeals section, but since that wasn't enough for you, you decided to drag it right back into another topic. But your activity in the complaints area isn't a valid reason to get hit with a penalty elsewhere.

No, you absolutely cannot loop a single sanction through multiple threads, especially when we have a dedicated space specifically for those issues. This thread is only still active because you received a partial penalty, so we kept it open as an appeal for that specific thing. So, please, keep your posts here strictly limited to the partial penalty itself; I've updated the title to reflect that.
I think you should probably dive a bit deeper into your objection regarding the card, because right now I'm not quite following what part of it is tripping you up. Also, there’s really no need to go back and reply to that last administrative note, since his word is pretty much final on this one anyway.

Request to remove partial content from the Religion PDF in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Just an off-topic side note here regarding the whole "removing a partial ban against the rules" thing—specifically when people talk about it happening before the six-month mark. Look, that six-month window isn't some hard-and-fast rule, and it’s definitely not set in stone. In principle, a partial ban is issued indefinitely without a fixed expiration date. Moderators can decide to lift one whenever they feel it's appropriate, especially if they see a user has actually turned things around and it makes sense to give them another shot.

That six-month timeframe is really just a general guideline for when someone might reach out to ask for a review. Users have every right to make that request (though, mind you, that doesn't guarantee the ban will actually be lifted), but they can't just keep doing it constantly because, honestly, that would be pointless. Every single decision regarding partial bans and whether they get rescinded is handled on a case-by-case basis.

So, let's please stop using the non-existent argument that a partial ban was "removed unfairly." As long as the moderators make a call and the admin team backs it up, that decision is perfectly valid, regardless of how much time has passed since the ban was originally handed down.

I'm not looking to start a huge debate over this post, so let's try to keep further comments off this specific topic for now.

I'm sorry you feel that way, and honestly, you probably just confused me with someone else 😁 because I haven't posted in the Religion section since 2010. It feels pretty weird that anyone would still remember the 'vibe' or energy behind posts someone wrote years ago.

Well, I definitely remember your posts and your tone. And for the record, I haven't been posting much in the Religion section for a long time either.
I'm just using it as an example.

You hit the nail on the head right there. When it comes to deciding whether to pull a subforum, that call rests entirely with the current moderators overseeing that specific section. Since any user posting there is essentially operating under their jurisdiction, the responsibility for keeping that corner of the forum running smoothly falls squarely on their shoulders. If they can't reach a consensus, then the subforum stays exactly as it is. Now, it is technically possible for a moderator to recuse themselves from a vote, but honestly, that’s incredibly rare—it only happens if they make a very deliberate, personal choice to step back. But generally speaking, these decisions are made unanimously; every single moderator involved needs to be on the same page before anything changes.

Susan Price30, look, I totally get where you're coming from—back when you first joined and got your partial access, the whole moderator lineup was completely different. I’m just laying this out for you in general terms so you can get a better handle on how the gears actually turn around here!

The moderators over at Religion have already gone through this thread of yours, and they’ll be reaching out to you directly soon.

Joshua Jones13 said:Alright, it’s pretty straightforward. If a moderator feels the conversation is drifting or straying too far from the original PDF topic, they have every right to steer things back using warnings. Since you spent most of your posts trying to interpret the law, I don't really see the issue with a mod stepping in to redirect the debate and telling you to stop doing that.
I read through the thread and, honestly, I don't see anything wrong with how it's being moderated. As far as I'm concerned, I have nothing else to say. The admins can step in if they feel it's actually necessary.

Honestly, I'm just going to sit here and agree with everything the moderators and the supermod have laid out. Siddharta, if I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to take a second to really digest everything you've been told here and actually think about it, so maybe try not to brush off those moderator warnings moving forward.

That's it for this thread. Locking it now.

The atmosphere over there is just so strictly controlled—it feels like if you show even a hint of attitude, a moderator is right there waiting to step in and shut the whole thing down before you can even finish your sentence!

Look, the mods aren't exactly sitting behind their screens 24/7, but hey, you can always flag any posts that you think are breaking the rules—that way, they’ll spot them much faster! 🙂

silverviper3 said:In just 60 posts, I managed to rack up enough points for a three-day ban, and after that, it’s been a warning every other day. Here are the stats:

It hasn't actually been every other day, so let's not exaggerate things here. You received your first two warnings on September 7th, but one of them was actually rescinded at the request of the moderator. She was definitely trying to work with you there, and if you had checked your profile, you would have seen that yourself. 🙂 Your second warning came on September 19th because you were trolling—you can't just tell people to go screw themselves; that’s simply not how we do things on this forum. If someone is provoking you, just report their post to the moderators by clicking the little icon , which is exactly what that feature is for. As for the last warning for trolling, I was the one who issued it on September 25th because you were getting into a back-and-forth argument with another user instead of sticking to the actual topic. And regarding your claim that he labeled you a troll and a clone, well, he received a warning for that as well.

We have general rules for the forum, and most sub-forums have their own specific, more detailed guidelines, and we expect all users to read them and follow them. It’s pretty clear you didn't do that, because you haven't received a single warning without cause.

silverviper3 said:http://i47.tinypic.com/i27zaa.jpg

The very first thread I started—when I opened it, the moderator suggested I look for a girl in the designated dating thread. But since I wasn't even looking for a girl or any kind of physical connection or dating setup, I tried to explain that to him, and you can read his response for yourselves.

I will agree with you that you should have received a more specific and precise answer, but you also phrased your question in a very offensive and inappropriate way toward the users who were actually discussing the topic.

silverviper3 said:My first warning happened after I started a thread in the sports betting section. I tried searching everywhere for the right thread, and I even started a separate thread asking where the betting discussion was, but that thread was closed without any reply.
After I politely asked what I did wrong, which rule I broke, and pointed out that I was brand new with only a few posts, the moderator decided to waive the warning since I was a newcomer.

I do agree that we should be more accommodating to new users and explain things clearly if they ask politely about their mistakes. For things like that, you can always use private messages so you don't have to start entire threads in the General Discussion area.

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that I went ahead and stripped out the IMG tag from your opening post because those images were just massive—they were stretching the whole page out! To keep things looking clean, please try to resize your photos to 640*480 before posting, as that's the standard limit here on the forum. 🙂

Also, just a quick heads-up for the future: posting private messages isn't allowed unless they're official moderator warnings or disciplinary notices. I just wanted to give you the lowdown now so you don't run into trouble later.

I really hope this clears things up and doesn't make you feel like everyone's ganging up on you! You've had a bit of a bumpy, clumsy start getting settled in here, but please don't let it get you down—it definitely doesn't have to stay that way, and we're happy to have you around. 🙂

Michelle Phillips54 said:Drew Lee7, honestly, it’s not even that I see any kind of bias from the Lumber moderators against you; if anything, I actually think they’ve been incredibly patient and more than tolerant with you.

I have to side with the supermoderator on this one. I’ve been reading your posts for a long time now—probably since you first joined the forum—and I’m genuinely surprised by how much leeway you're given and how hard people try to explain things to you when you just stubbornly refuse to accept them.

Please, just take this as a sincere plea to stop presenting your own views—which, let's face it, clash with the standards of a civilized society and the actual rules of this forum—as if they were universal truths. Stop trying to force them on everyone else while simultaneously belittling, insulting, and degrading people, and basically stripping away the basic rights that every user here deserves to have.

You aren't going to get banned, but you might catch a red card if you keep this up since you're totally off-topic. This is specifically driftingfalcon3's complaint about one particular issue, and there really isn't any need to turn it into a massive, generalized debate.
Student-teacher dynamics vs. parent-teacher dynamics in Students & Teens ·
Christian Richardson36 said:The crux of the matter is that I have another child attending this same school—and that teacher gave us a full week's notice regarding the parent-teacher conference. It was the exact same story for my high schooler. But for my youngest? Well, I had already committed to obligations for that Tuesday afternoon long before this popped up, so it’s incredibly frustrating when someone who should have started planning two weeks ago—but justifiably failed to do so—suddenly decides to hold me accountable instead.

What does "advance notice" actually mean in a practical sense? I didn't even find out until Monday night around 8:00 PM because that's when I finally walked through my front door, so if we're being strictly accurate, we're looking at less than 24 hours of lead time. That’s why I’m asking—I’ve been scouring the internet trying to find this school's official handbook or bylaws, which I assume should be public record—other schools in our district make them easily accessible... As for her little "triangular" logic—honestly, I could have had a surgery scheduled for that day, couldn't I? My kids are new to this school, so I haven't established a rapport with her yet. And she certainly doesn't know me—she has no idea what my schedule looks like, or what my kids have going on.

That’s why I’m looking for the legal perspective here. One shouldn't just assume that I'm unavailable for a meeting without considering all the underlying circumstances, right?

Honestly, I don’t think you really need to dive into the legalities of this, though I totally get why you'd want to stay informed. At the end of the day, you two will sit down, you’ll show up at the school, and you can just explain that you couldn't make it because you weren't given enough notice—and that should be the end of it. 🙂 You’re meeting with your kid's teacher to get acquainted and stay in the loop, not appearing before a judge in a courtroom. 😁
