We actually dive into topics like this right here, so maybe do a quick search first to see if someone else has already started the conversation? Or just add a bit more detail to your idea before you try to kick off a new thread here.🙂

Everything's sorted out (and hey, just a heads up, it's totally fine to say: "Check my profile/contact info, my email is right there in my vCard"), so feel free to lock this thread (I really don't want this turning into a repeat of that last mess).

Thanks for all the input.

So, I guess mentioning it within a post works, as long as I don't actually reveal my email address: "Just click my profile/contact info, you can grab my email via the vCard, catch you later."

But essentially, I can't do a) link directly to the vCard in a post, or b) link to the vCard in a signature. Did I get that right?

It would actually be ideal if we could just ask the system admin to disable this option for everyone entirely—I mean, nobody really uses it here anyway, and even you guys weren't aware it existed. 😁

Thanks too, Christian Taylor3.

It’s not meant to be inside posts or signatures, but rather in the user profile itself (which you captured perfectly in that screenshot). Once someone activates their digital business card, it shows up as a download option under their 'contact information' section.

* @Paul Green31/">@@Paul Green31, I'm with you on that.

We're just running in circles here, but thanks anyway for the input. 🙂

Looking back at the very first post in this thread:

In a standard post, is it allowed or not? In a signature, is it allowed or not? ("Please feel free to use my virtual business card"). Like I mentioned before, that link lives in the user profile/contact info section (which is entirely up to the individual). By the way, ever since 2009, I’ve been pulling a direct link to my email in my signature—not my-own-personal-email, just one based on my handle—and nobody ever gave me a hard time about it. Yesterday, I finally got tired of that long, rambling three-line signature and just trimmed it down to my Twitter.

It seems pretty obvious what the forum's script is designed to do: prevent email addresses from being posted out in the open, instead routing them indirectly through a download click. Just because there might be a occasional lapse where someone doesn't follow those rules doesn't mean we should stop enforcing them... which is why I think Persephone's question was actually quite helpful; we all learned something new 🙂 . To me, the situation is fairly clear-cut, isn't it?

Responsibility doesn't lie with the forum; it lies solely with the users.

...but if it's permitted (even if it bypasses the script) within posts or signatures, then the responsibility shifts back to the forum...

I’ll say it again: that specific "Allow vCard download" setting is what lets users decide whether to make their email or personal details public. It’s entirely up to them. In your profile under "contact information," there’s already a separate link to "download vCard," which you can just include in your very first post here. Now, whether it's okay to include that exact same link (to your vCard) directly within a post is one thing, but is it okay to stick it in a signature? Personally, I think it should be fine, since that info is already out there on any user's profile anyway. If the answer is "no," then we fall back to: "Check my profile/contact info—my email is in my vCard, catch you later."

In reality, people aren't really broadcasting themselves publicly in the sense of waving an email address around in a post or a signature. You have to be a registered member of the forum, and the user specifically has to enable the option to allow their vCard download before anyone can even get to their email.

You are absolutely spot on regarding that banned user. Regardless, this whole discussion applies to all users and the ability (or lack thereof) to share personal data, including email addresses. The "Allow vCard download" option is what makes that possible.

As I mentioned before, it's the user's choice, and the site's code allows for the 'sharing' of personal info like an email, but strictly through this method. Like I said earlier, it's clear there is a way to find an email, but that way isn't by typing the address directly into a post. Typing it out is where the real identification issue lies. This way, at least we know the address is tied to a specific username, and someone who is just browsing the forum without being logged in won't be able to scrape that data. I honestly think this is a pretty solid way for the forum to protect everyone's privacy.

If we circle back to the beginning of this whole situation regarding banned users—specifically that one user who (let's just assume for the sake of argument) left their email address in a post on the newsfeed before it was scrubbed—it’s clear the admin did exactly what they were supposed to do. First off, once someone is banned, their ability to communicate on the site is essentially cut off, leaving them with nothing but that dedicated "banned users" corner. Honestly, that is the extent of what any moderator can realistically do for a user in that position. They aren't allowed to jump into other threads, they can't engage in private messaging, and at the end of the day, they're effectively sidelined. There’s no contact information listed. If we actually had a profile feature that included a vCard option—assuming the user opted in, of course—I’d like to reiterate my point once more: even then, the email address wouldn't just be sitting there out in the open. It would simply be a matter of clicking "download vCard" and that would be that. Simple as that.

Christian Taylor3 said:Look, there was this locked thread where people were flat-out claiming that no kind of email address is allowed—you know, like veseli_medo_forum@gmail.com or any variation of a user's nickname. Well, that’s just plain wrong. You are absolutely mistaken. Even if we listen to the more reasonable folks like Vojky or the corporate types saying, "The only exception is an email like complaints@example.com," the vBulletin "Allow vCard download" option completely debunks that argument.

It's not about putting them in posts; it's about having the option available if a user actually wants it. It isn't even displayed on a profile that everyone can see—it's specifically handled this way.

Otherwise, this whole feature and the vCard would be totally useless, because you could just type your email in a post or send a DM. The whole reason this exists is that an email address shouldn't be something you wave around publicly. Choosing to let someone else see it is a personal decision, and that's exactly why the option is there.

wanderingbadger44 said:Thanks. It's truly refreshing to see such a well-meaning and polite response.

However, the conclusion you're drawing feels a bit ambiguous to me, to say the least.

Think of it this way: the profile settings don't ask for or show details like your marital status or how many children you have. Following that exact same line of reasoning, one could argue that none of that personal information should ever be mentioned anywhere in a discussion thread.🤷

Thanks. wanderingbadger44🙂

Look, there’s actually a specific field right under the "required at registration" section where you enter your email and password. That part isn't visible to any other users, which really drives home how much we prioritize data privacy and keeping sensitive info under wraps. From what I know about how most online forums and message boards operate, that's pretty much standard practice. At the end of the day, your email address and your marital status are two completely different things—one is private data, and the other is just personal info. My point was simply that people choose not to share certain details specifically because of those security measures.
Email address? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
wanderingbadger44 said:I was wondering if someone who’s been banned from the forum is still allowed to post their email address on the FBI site.

If that's actually against the rules, and it's clearly laid out in the forum guidelines, then I sincerely apologize for missing that detail and would appreciate it if someone could point me toward the specific rule.

On the other hand, if it isn't prohibited, why is it that a banned user's posts containing an email address keep getting deleted over and over again?

What is definitely against the rules is posting someone else's email. We can look at this situation like this: if you open up your control panel and go to 'edit profile,' you'll see right away that your email and password aren't even in the fields marked as 'publicly visible to all users.' Instead, we have slots for ICQ, MSN, Skype, and so on. It's pretty clear the system wasn't designed to have users display an email address directly in their profiles since those options don't exist. So, there’s really no point in putting it in your posts. That's the logic behind why the email was deleted—it's not necessarily a direct ban in the rulebook, but rather a byproduct of how things are set up.

Even the pinned threads have those classic I. L. starter posts acting as the foundation for the whole discussion!!!

Pinned Thread: Christianity - 1000 Whys and 1000 Wherefores (1 2 3 4 5 ... )

Is there any way we can just wipe away those repulsive posts overflowing with nothing but pure hate speech?

Well, they won't be around much longer anyway. That massive Christianity thread is hitting its 10k post limit soon, so we'll be moving on to Part 2 shortly. Once that happens, nobody will be hyperventilating over some old, controversial I. L. legend from back in the day (honestly, I find it hard to believe some people are only just now hearing about I. L.).😁

Chris Peterson53 suggested that the admins should weigh in, especially since we’re practically witnessing forum history right here. Personally? I wouldn't touch a thing. It was a different era back then. There isn't a single word in those old posts that doesn't make my hair stand on end—not to mention what they had to say about women... though that didn't stop me from reading Ivanov's unconventional work 😬. But for me, I wouldn't delete anything. I wouldn't mess with it. It feels like a lifetime ago; I almost miss those days when you could actually speak your mind without everything blowing up...

In my book *Complaints About Religion*, I laid out this issue in great detail.
To put it bluntly: I find the way they tracked the pope's visit in that official PDF absolutely shameful.

But since I'm already here, let's use that as a jumping-off point. The real issue is the systematic erasure and the constant watering down of religion, especially Catholicism.

I’m honestly not sure why you’d call it shameful. Everything the users wanted to say—or still want to say—is right there in that open thread: The Pope in Washington, D.C. / Group Topic. So, I don't quite follow what you mean by a "systematic erasure" or the "watering down" of religion, particularly the Catholic faith.
The proof of that relativism for me is this response:

And yes, I believe the exact opposite. That PDF is essentially a specialized anti-Catholic publication. Because of that, I don't think it's an appropriate way to communicate with believers; otherwise, people will just see the moderation as biased.

What are you basing this "inappropriateness" on? There is a dedicated thread where anyone can post, provided they stick to the forum rules. At the end of the day, the quality and engagement of any given thread really just depend on the users.

As proof, look at how there isn't even a celebration for Christmas (the Catholic one) happening here. It used to be celebrated regularly across several sub-forums, but not in the religion section.

But who decides how we "celebrate" things on this forum? Usually, up until now, it’s been as simple as sayingMerry Christmas. So, it’s really up to you all, dear users, to start new threads or post in existing ones that cover the same topic.🤷
Why is trolling allowed on the spirituality sub? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Taylor Campbell4 said:Thanks for getting back to me.
I used the report function specifically designed for "off-topic posts"—I’m just not really one for dropping links everywhere. If that feature exists, it shouldn't just be for show, right?

PS: Honestly, I don't think it's that much trouble, Anna—it feels like trolling has become a regular occurrence in almost every other thread lately. It probably became the norm because it hasn't been flagged or dealt with for quite some time.

Let’s not get carried away. You reported a single post in a thread you started yourself, and two posts were removed. That’s really all there is to it.

Regarding the whole "trolling" situation in the spirituality section: look, spirituality is meant to be... well, free-form. Being overly rigid or aggressively deleting posts would actually do more harm than good to the vibe of this subforum. That said (just as a heads-up), we still have to make sure threads don't veer completely off the rails, which is why some get locked—temporarily or permanently—and others get wiped entirely. So, it's definitely not a "free-for-all," despite what you might be suggesting.
Why are religion threads being closed for no reason? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
cosmicskipper82 said:I want to file a formal complaint here regarding the moderation of the 'religion' subforum, specifically concerning how the moderators interact with the community.

As far as the actual moderation goes, threads are being shut down without any logical explanation. Just Look Up...

Actually, I think the reasons are more than "logical" enough (just read my response).

Regarding how the moderators treat users, my issue is really about how that specific moderator handled my perfectly civilized critique within a thread meant for that exact purpose. My response was essentially a one-sentence dismissal (this part starting with 'only this' was added later) which boils down to 'I won't answer you.' But when I pointed out that wasn't an actual answer, I was met with an ad hominem attack.

The moderator was actually being quite lenient toward your 'complaint,' because usually, people only file these when they feel personally 'slighted' by a deleted or closed thread. You aren't staff, yet I still took the time to reply to you.
The rules state you get one follow-up, and anything beyond that is considered spam. If you want to participate in this forum and the PDF, you have to respect the ground rules. Even then, I was being very generous by simply deleting your post instead of hitting you with a spam penalty.
As for the alleged 'ad hominem,' that’s just not true. If you actually read your own comments in that thread, you weren't even addressing the topic; you were doing the opposite—arguing why the topic was pointless and trying to steer off-topic onto specialized forums. Then, once the thread is closed, suddenly your tune changes and you look for an excuse to start a fight.
So, my suggestion is either change how the religion section is moderated or scrap the complaint book entirely if it's useless because moderators refuse to dignify user feedback with a response. If we are only allowed one follow-up, then there's no reason not to write a detailed explanation. Unless, of course, there isn't one. To me, it feels like there isn't an objective reason for these closures at all; it seems like they happen purely based on the moderator's personal preferences.

Look Up.

...it seems like they happen purely based on the moderator's personal preferences.

Agajin, I believe I explained the reasoning for closing the thread in great detail, but you clearly can't be reasoned with. You shouldn't jump to such baseless assumptions, because there is absolutely no truth to what you're claiming.
Button not responding when pressed in Philosophy ·
cosmicskipper82 said:If you were standing before a button right now that offered you immediate, absolute nonexistence, would you press it? And let’s be clear: strip away any sentimentality about leaving loved ones behind or causing grief; assume instead that this disappearance includes being wiped from their memories entirely, leaving them with no trace of your existence and no capacity for sorrow.

If the answer is yes—what is the motivation? If it is no—what holds you back?

I honestly believe such a button would be a welcome relief for many people when life starts hitting rock bottom (though I suppose some might choose it for purely metaphysical reasons). It’s a very clean option—no suffering involved, and nobody else has to hurt either.

As for me, I don't see (yet) any reason to hit that button. Personally, I’d love to live much longer than the hand we've been dealt... though I’m definitely not looking for "eternity." Just a little more time. A few more chances to learn, to hang out with friends, to stare up at the stars, or just to feel a warm summer breeze on my face...
