Best video players and similar software? in Software ·
Here’s my take:

Everything VLC Media Player can handle, GOM Player handles too—and honestly, back in the day, that was the gold standard for testing players.

But if you really look at the specs, VLC actually supports even more formats than both of those combined.

So... GOM is great because it's lightweight, free, snappy, and super versatile. VLC has even better format support, but I just can't stand its interface.
Question about my HP Envy printer? in Computer Peripherals ·
I'm not entirely sure if you can get away with having just one black cartridge installed, because there's a good chance the printer will throw an error code at you.

However, you could try going into your print settings and selecting GREYSCALE. That should convert everything into a black-and-white mix, which means you'll only be draining the black ink.
Guys, I need help with my media player!!!!! in Software ·
GOM player is the answer to your prayers.
It plays everything, including subtitles—just grab the subtitle file and drag it right onto the GOM player window.

If you don't have the most practical video player yet, here it is for free.
www.gomplayer.com

If dragging doesn't work for you, just open the movie with GOM, hit ALT + E, then select open file (that's where you find your subtitle).

Or... if you keep the movie and the subtitle in the same folder with identical names, GOM will AUTOMATICALLY show the subtitles without you doing a thing.

Maybe he’s looking for 2.0b—which the 9600 doesn't support—or maybe version 3.0, which is also missing on that card.

Which version of Accenture are you running? Or are you using those Omega drivers?

Any good programs for learning Canadian? in Software ·
Well... since I’m fluent in both languages and all that... I actually took the long way around.

Anyway, if you really want to master Canadian, the first thing you have to do is kill off the letter L. You have to pronounce that hard L like an "lj" sound.

Have you ever noticed how much Canadians struggle with the L? Seriously, try asking a Canadian to speak some American English instead and you'll hear it immediately.

Once you nail that, let me know.
How do I update my BIOS? in Software ·
Long story short.

You just grab the BIOS file and the flashing utility, put them on a bootable DOS floppy disk, boot from the floppy, run the flash, hit reset, and you're done.

There are other ways to go about it, but this is the most common and tried-and-true method.

I'm not entirely sure what you're aiming for here, but try this:

Grab a potentiometer rated for 5W.
Alternatively, just use PWM fan control. You won't have any overheating issues, plus you can dial it from 0% all the way to 100%, rather than being stuck between 50% and 100%.

If you want the fan to actually spin at lower voltages using a variable potentiometer, you'll need a larger electrolytic capacitor to help bypass the resistor during startup.

As for those LEDs... where's your schematic or the specs? Different colored LEDs require different forward voltages to even turn on.
Look, if you calculated a resistor for 12V to get an LED glowing, then drop that voltage down to 6V while keeping the same resistance, the LED will still light up, but it’ll be much dimmer. It really depends on the color.
Blue and white LEDs usually need about 4V to kick in, whereas red and yellow ones sit closer to 2 - 2.5V.

Do you have the max current and voltage ratings for these LEDs?

Whatever you do, DO NOT wire those LEDs in parallel.
Windows XP or Windows Vista? in Software ·
So, what actually happens when you start using a USB Flash Drive as extra RAM?

In my opinion, it won't help much. A thumb drive just can't keep up with the amount of memory Windows Vista devours.

On a PC with 2GB of RAM or more, you can really feel the impact of ReadyBoost.

-------
Hypothetically, if you have Windows XP running on 512 MB versus Windows Vista running on 512 MB plus a flash drive... which one is going to be faster?
Windows XP or Windows Vista? in Software ·
Windows Vista? No thanks.

What's the point of using Vista?
Everything you need to do runs better and faster on Windows XP.

The facts:
Vista is already out there.
It’s being sold, but honestly, it’s barely moving, despite how much Microsoft tries to push it.
People just don't "like" Vista.
And drivers for Vista... that could turn into a long, painful headache.
If you want Aero, Vista demands at least 1GB of RAM, a decent processor, and a real graphics card.
Running Windows XP on a SATA hard drive in Software ·
When you're running the XPji installer, it asks if you want to press F6 to load third-party drivers. You’ll need to have a Floppy disk ready with those specific SATA drivers for your hard drive.

Without them, Windows XP won't even see your hard drive. It's like it isn't even there. No drivers means no drive.

Since most laptops these days don't have a Floppy disk drive, I'm guessing yours doesn't either. In that case, you'd use Rufus to slip those drivers onto the optical media along with the Windows XP installation files.

I think they told you that you have to use another computer to create that custom Rufus installation and burn it.
If that’s the only computer you have at home... well... maybe head over to a friend's place and burn it there.

Have you tried hitting F6, popping out the Windows XP CD, and then putting in a CD containing the SATA drivers instead?

Otherwise, you're looking at the same process using Rufus.

----------------
Just in case it's still a bit fuzzy.

Windows XP can't communicate with SATA drives without those drivers.
It handles Floppy disks and IDE drives just fine, so that's where those drivers usually belong.

The magic word is TORRENT

Just type DVDFab Platinum torrent into Google and boom—there you go.
I managed to track down the latest version, 3.0.8.0, fully unlocked.

You’ll obviously need a little help to actually run them. If you're using Opera, it handles everything natively, but if not, just grab uTorrent.
That’s pretty much what you’re looking for. You can tweak those settings right in the printer properties—at least on my ancient Canon.

Check out this photo. Look at what my old workhorse can do. Honestly, there isn't a layout option you couldn't find. Two pages per sheet, four pages, top-right, bottom-left, mirrored... it does it all.

If I started showing you every single sub-menu option, we'd be here all day.🙂

Anyway, it handles basically everything without needing any extra software. I haven't tested the newer Canon models, but they likely have the same features, if not better drivers.
MP3 normalization: thoughts? in Software ·
I know there’s some software out there specifically for normalizing MP3 files, but the name escapes me right now. It’s pretty fast, though.

Actually, Not Nero has everything you're looking for.

The only catch is that you really need all your MP3s to be properly organized first. You can't have one track with no ID3 tags and another one cluttered with way too much metadata...

As for normalization:

You just select New audio CD and then drag in the tracks you want...

You probably already know that part.

Okay, so then you right-click a song if you want to PLAY (listen to it)

If it sounds too quiet, just right-click it to bring up the menu and select PROPERTIES. Once that AUDIO TRACK PROPERTIES window pops up, you can change the title or even trim the track. Just go to the EQUALIZER section and slide that main bar up to boost the volume, or down if you need to quiet it.

There are plenty of other options in there, too.

So yeah, just a quick right-click on the song and you're set.
How do I clean up my PC? in Software ·
Just wiping the C: drive and starting from scratch🙂—it’s been tried before, and honestly, it works wonders.

Once you've got that clean install, just load up Kaspersky and a ZoneLabs firewall, then grab Chrome for your browsing.

I usually remember to run a quick disk defrag around that time too. A registry cleaner helps out occasionally, especially after you've been installing and uninstalling various little apps.
Best torrent clients - what are you using? in Software ·
uTorrent

It’s straightforward, reliable, and 🙂 beats all the others, at least in my book.

🙂
I’ve been playing around with this lately. If you're working with MP3s at 128 kbps or higher—like 160 or 192—you should definitely stick with iTunes.

Here is my little workflow.

I use iTunes 10, which I downloaded and then actually registered (And believe me, it's worth it! ).

First, open up the Windows Media Player

Then, look for the option for your devices—maybe CD-R D: or E: depending on what your drive is called.
Just drag your chosen MP3s right in there.

Once they're loaded (and feel free to reorder them however you like...)
just hit BURN.

Pick your burning speed. Personally, I recommend staying low—maybe 4, 8, 12, or 16. Slowing it down usually yields much better quality, and that's really it.

HAPPY BURNING!
