What exactly counts as an intrusive thought? in Psychology & Therapy ·
I get these bizarre, intrusive thoughts while I’m driving—specifically right when I’m hitting a curve. I find myself vividly imagining that I just won't straighten the wheel. Instead, I’ll floor the accelerator, smash straight through the guardrail, and end up Flying into the abyss at 3 PM. It’s some pretty intense imagery ☕
. Fortunately, my current medication regimen has managed to push those impulses out of the spotlight.
I'm not really happy with my headspace right now... in Psychology & Therapy ·
Morgan Campbell4, get moving and clear the path. Stop sitting around waiting for the perfect moment to actually start living your life, because those who wait end up chasing nothing but shadows. The right time to take action is right now, this very second. Now, don't get me wrong—I'm not saying you should fly around like a headless chicken without any plan or purpose, wasting your energy on nonsense. What I mean is that you need to pull yourself together, gather your strength, tap into your own power, and just start making moves. Don't wait for anyone, and certainly don't wait for anything.

I didn't bother mentioning that because I wasn't trying to stir up any unnecessary "drama," but rather to suggest you all shouldn't be oversharing so much. That said, I’ll say it one more time: if you're all perfectly fine with how things are, then I'm fine with it too. 🙂

Look, I don't want to be a total buzzkill here, but are you guys seriously okay with broadcasting the exact location of our meetup like this? If you don't care, fine, it's your call, but I just felt the need to remind everyone that you really don't have to share all those specifics so publicly 🙂
How to live more freely? in Psychology & Therapy ·
Stop nitpicking over every little detail and just stay on topic. If you guys have some petty disagreement or need to clear something up, do yourselves a favor and take it to the DMs instead. 😉

Look, I truly get how brutal those mood swings can be. But I’m telling you again: you are stronger than any of the chaos you dump onto this forum. Behind every single one of your setbacks and every moment you feel like you're spiraling, there is a spark in you that keeps breaking through, over and over again. I realize this is just people typing on an internet board and things often get lost in translation or misinterpreted, but somehow, I’m not worried about you. I genuinely believe you’re one of those rare people who will actually cross the finish line and hit their goals—regardless of your diagnosis, regardless of what happened in your childhood, and regardless of all the hurdles life keeps throwing your way.
See, it started raining. Most people would just sit there waiting for the rain to stop before they even think about going for their walk or their run. A lot of people would just give up entirely... but you aren't most people. You don't quit. 😉

A ban? 😲 Wait, did you honestly think you could come here looking for support and end up getting banned? If that were actually how things worked on this platform, I’d step down from my moderator position myself. 🙂

Harold Anderson3 🙂

I honestly don't think you realize just how much strength and genuine positivity you carry despite everything being thrown at you. You have this knack for finding the silver lining, even when things look bleak. So what if you took a walk by yourself today? At least you were in your own good company, rather than dragging along someone mindless. Real companionship will show up when it’s meant to. Stop putting this unnecessary pressure on yourself and just stick to your routine—keep moving, get outside, and find your flow. Don't feel like you're some kind of burden to others, either. Most people out there are just walking around in packs, pretending they aren't chronically lonely.

Consider this some friendly advice: think twice before you hit "post" and be extremely careful about the personal details you leave lying around on these forums. For certain topics, you're much better off just sending a private message. 🙂
Disowning a family member in Psychology ·
boldbadger20 said:I'm not entirely sure where this belongs, but I suppose I'm looking for some perspective on how people might handle a situation like this.

I'll keep this brief: a close family member, an armed robbery, and a conviction.

I guess I'm just wondering if, in your opinion, that person is still worth having in my life, or if any kind of relationship is even worth valuing anymore.

Are you seriously asking people who don't know a single thing about you or this individual? It’s a bit bizarre, frankly. It is nearly impossible to even make a generalization here because there are a million different variables that dictate how our decisions actually play out in the real world.

My personal philosophy is simple: I measure a hundred times and cut once. But when I finally decide to cut ties, there is absolutely no going back. That shift happens on a profound, internal level within me. I suppose we all have one—that invisible line we call a boundary. Once someone crosses it, the bridge isn't just burned; it's gone. There is no return trip.
I am not sitting here theorizing; I am speaking from lived experience. Even a member of my own immediate family pushed me to my absolute limit with their behavior, and we haven't spoken since. I spent years trying to fix things, desperately hoping for a change, but eventually, the day came where I simply felt it was over. And that was it. Period. The relationship is dead and buried.

Jose Ward4 said:@Harold Anderson3 man, I'm heading to the clinic. If I had actually gone to the hospital, I think I would have completely lost it. Yesterday was just bizarre. It felt like she was playing mind games with me. I don't know. She asks me stuff like, "Who's cooking for you?" As if she doesn't know I live alone. And then there were more questions like that. My head started pounding and I just began to lose myself. I started acting totally irrational. And at the end, she just kind of brushed me off. Like, I don't even know how to describe it. Just a total "I don't give a damn about you" vibe. That's the impression I got. Honestly, it was like, "You hurt my feelings, so now you can just screw off." I have no idea. I barely made it out of there. I honestly don't even remember how I got home. I swear. It’s like she washed my brain with those eyes and that voice—like she keeps changing her tone. I've got no clue. bogte, it's like she's the crazy one, not me. Thank God I didn't go to the IRS right after that. Jesus, imagine the look they'd give me. My God. You know how it is, you have this reputation among all those "normal" people and then... well, thank God I didn't go. Look, this might sound weird to you, but you know when you take your car to a mechanic? Like, you drop it off at a shop in Chicago or something for repairs. The mechanic runs a diagnosis, tells you what's wrong with the machine—maybe the screen is shot or the timing belt is gone—and then he tries to fix it or swap it out. That’s exactly how it felt to me. I felt like a car, just sitting there with all these emotions, except I'm not a car, and here she is diagnosing a malfunction in me. It’s such a terrible feeling. It's practically telling you that something is fundamentally broken inside you. And I think that goes for male psychiatrists too. It's the same method. Establishing a breakdown. Why is it that instead of a kidney or a heart, it's always your psyche or your soul? That's not something to play with. I don't even know what else to say. I actually feel a bit better today. Better, anyway. I forgot about it. The anger and the anxiety just vanished. Now that I'm thinking back on it... when I walked in and looked at her before she even looked at me, I had this feeling like she was reading my thoughts. Just another machine.

Look, you don't exactly have much time during those kinds of appointments. Doctors are often forced to churn through an overwhelming number of patients, and that's a direct failure of the healthcare system itself. I'm not trying to make excuses for anyone, but I want you to understand that this isn't always about the individual doctor-patient relationship. There is a massive, systemic machine behind it all, and ultimately, it's the patients who end up suffering the consequences.
Jose Ward4, any chance you can change your profile picture?
Chronic pain, fatigue, and psych meds in Psychology & Therapy ·
mistydrifter55, I dealt with glossopharyngeal neuralgia—just constant, excruciating chronic pain that dragged on for months. At first, they tried putting me on corticosteroids, which were absolutely useless. Total waste of time. But after scouring some international medical forums, I saw people talking about how Lyric and Tegretol actually worked for this. My doctors wouldn't touch those prescriptions; instead, they just kept shuffling me off to pain management clinics, and eventually, I ended up with a physical therapist who spent weeks basically blasting the painful area with a laser. It turns out two nerves were inflamed—one exiting the brain and one heading toward the spinal cord. It took me a solid six or seven months before that agony finally subsided. Honestly, there were moments I thought I wasn't going to make it. I wouldn't wish that kind of suffering on my worst enemy...
It’s an old one, but man, was it creative. Even without leaning heavily on profanity, the imagery is incredibly vivid...
Why are some people always in such a rush? in Psychology ·

This would make for a great dark comedy series.

From: As the years crawl by, I get this feeling that everything around me is just accelerating. When things finally slow down for a second, you start to actually value the time you have left. You begin to notice the world—and the people in it—a little more clearly.
But let's face it, it's hard for anyone to hit the brakes these days. We live in an era obsessed with consumerism and material status... slowing down, or even just changing course, feels almost impossible.

And let's be real—where do you think Smoje gets his inspiration? It's clearly pulled straight from the eccentricities of those tiny, isolated rural towns out in the Midwest. 😁

Walter Thompson3 said:I’ve heard that joke before, but that’s not quite the point here.

Some people just have way more on their plates than others. If they don't move fast, they simply won't get everything done.
They're juggling multiple jobs, supporting a massive family, taking care of elderly relatives, and trying to make it to work on time—all without a housekeeper to handle the cooking or the laundry. That's where the rush comes from.

Plus, people are wired differently. You’ve got the high-strung types, and then you’ve got the ones whose entire philosophy is "it'll happen when it happens."

Look, the people involved in this situation have actual names and surnames, and they’re all still right here in the same city, walking the same boardwalk. This isn't some punchline. Unless, of course, someone decided to turn a real-life situation into a joke.😁

Nothing. I carry everything with me when I go, leaving absolutely nothing behind for anyone else on this earth. Is all this chaos and terror we endure really just so we can leave some little legacy behind in this world or any other? Not a chance. ☕

Nicole Wells38 said:I honestly think people who turn every single joke or casual chat into something sexual—where everything either starts or ends with a dirty double entendre—just lack actual eloquence. It’s like they run out of things to talk about in everyday conversation, or maybe they just aren't physically or intellectually engaging enough to hold an interest, so they resort to that instead. At least, that's been my experience quite a bit. 😊

Sent from my iPhone 6 using Reddit

Personally, I believe that sexual connotations and being eloquent have absolutely nothing to do with one another. I know plenty of highly articulate individuals (if they weren't, they wouldn't be able to hold down certain professions, like working in major news networks, for instance), yet there isn't a single topic that can't be instantly pivoted into something involving sex. Granted, I also know people who are just a bit more frustrated in that area of their lives, so they steer every conversation exclusively in that direction. But those people aren't witty or interesting; they’re just frankly pathetic.
As for profanity—I've noticed that the more intelligent someone is, the better they are at crafting clever, original curses. In fact, it's precisely through those specific swear words that they capture the true essence of what they are describing. That doesn't mean they lack "finer" vocabulary; quite the opposite.
The only real factor is knowing where and with whom you use them. For example, if you are teaching a class in an American public school and giving kids a passionate lecture about duty and honor, you would certainly choose a more appropriate vocabulary. But if you're discussing that exact same topic with a friend or a partner, then it is completely acceptable to use much more colorful language to describe the absolute misery of life.

Jason Grant said:Let's talk about positivism, rationalism, and religion.

How do you justify the way modern Western medicine operates when they completely ignore the fundamental Hippocratic oath—first, do no harm?
Just the act of diagnosing a disease can be harmful in its own right, especially considering how many modern medical technologies actually have negative side effects.
Then there's the endless waiting in exam rooms and the total breakdown of the doctor-patient relationship—it's subjective, sure, but generally speaking, things are much worse now than they used to be, which doesn't help the patient one bit.

And look, I absolutely agree that scammers and charlatans in the alternative space should be prosecuted strictly.
But we also see cases where a practitioner helps a hundred people, yet one person unfortunately dies, and suddenly that therapist ends up behind bars.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, people die in hospitals on a daily basis, morgues are built right into the facilities, and nobody is held accountable.☕

😵

Regarding diagnostic equipment—yes, some of them cause harm (X-rays, CT scans, etc.), but without those tools, we wouldn't be able to get the rapid results a patient needs right now. It isn't black and white. Sure, specific devices can be harmful, and certain methods, like biopsies, are invasive, but without them, we wouldn't detect anything. We'd be preventing diseases when it's already too late instead of catching them at the very start.

I have friendships that have stood the test of time for decades now. Most of us are married with kids, but these are the people I will always make an effort to call or grab a drink with whenever possible. Because our lifestyles and the distances between us don't always allow for frequent hangouts, we rely on social media, FaceTime, and email to stay in the loop.

To me, friendship is absolutely paramount, and I firmly believe that making dedicated time for the people you care about isn't just a luxury—it's a necessity.🙂
