They are just as exhausting as people who:
a) simply refuse to listen to a word you say
b) insist their way is ALWAYS the right way, constantly trying to flex with the newest iPhone, the flashiest car, or the most expensive watch
It is pure insecurity radiating from them. By picking at others and forcing their own opinions down your throat, they are really just trying to mask their own deep-seated doubts... hoping if they keep the spotlight on everyone else's flaws, nobody will notice their own.
My best friend is an incredibly sweet and wonderful soul, yet he
constantly insists on steamrolling over everything. We will be discussing one thing, but once he decides he’s the expert on a topic, he just won't let it go. He actually devalues everything else, basically mocking my choices... It is quite much. The only way I can actually get a word in edgewise or shut him down is to be blunt: "You are being exhausting, please just let me speak." Then he gets a little offended and finally falls silent because his feelings are hurt. If he forgets himself and starts up again, I have to tell him he is being "rude" and "disrespectful."
When he starts arguing—claiming I don't know what I'm talking about because he read some random article or saw a clip on YouTube—I just tell him that I couldn't care less about those facts... because I want to do things my own way.
For instance, we are planning a trip to New York City. I want to be comfortable, so I am perfectly willing to pay $1,700 for a flight.
But no, he spends hoooooooours lecturing me about how much cheaper it would be to fly Lufthansa to a different hub and then just rent a car to drive to New York City. BUT I DON'T WANT THAT. I don't want to waste an entire day traveling. I just don't feel like it. YET, he still starts in on me about how I have no idea what I'm doing...
At that point, you just have to tell him that it is my life, my money, and I will do exactly what I want to do.
On the other hand, he can be absolutely wonderful, and I love him dearly... I don't think this specific flaw is such a massive dealbreaker.😉
God knows, I can be pretty exhausting myself sometimes too...😁
