Why was the "be all I can be" thread locked?! in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Carl Wilson10 said:I find myself wondering why the moderator "The edge" decided to lock this thread in the first place.
Perhaps the title wasn't quite right; a more sensible heading could have been chosen, couldn't it?
Maybe it was posted in the wrong section—couldn't it have been moved over to the soccer PDF instead?
Or perhaps there is someone who simply doesn't want this conversation taking place?
Is it possible that certain individuals harbor a lingering affection for the old America, or even worse, Mexico, which is why the moderator felt compelled to shut us down?
Would some people have preferred if, following Tuesday's game, we were listening to marches toward the Drina, or perhaps had Lepa Brena performing at the stadium like back in El Paso in '91?
Does this forum also suffer from a complete tyranny of thought?!
I would argue that the cry of "Blood and Soil" isn't necessarily an exaltation of Nazi Germany, despite what some claim. While it certainly saw use during the era of Nazi Germany, does that mean those three words are permanently forbidden? For God's sake, weren't our own volunteers and professional soldiers using similar sentiments during the early 90s? Our politicians love to insist that America was built on anti-fascist foundations, but I contend that America was also forged through the strength of such rallying cries! They were used by anyone throughout history fighting for their homeland, regardless of their political stripes. It is deeply disheartening to me that such a call is branded as fascism rather than patriotism; it isn't our fault if the Associated Press or any other subordinate entity chose to weaponize it. If we follow that logic, we wouldn't be able to use half the words in the English language just because they were once uttered by fascists!
That is my two cents, at least.
So, I ask again: why was the thread locked?!

I’m really hoping the moderators will jump in and give us an answer soon, but until then, I’d ask everyone to please hold off on any off-topic chatter since this isn't meant to be a substitute for the original discussion.
Religion PDF: Testing the argument on same-sex communities in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I think you guys are veering a bit too far off track here. Incest and homosexuality are completely different concepts and just can't be lumped together. To start with, when people practice their sexual orientation, they aren't hurting anyone, which is a massive distinction from incest. The fact that incestuous relationships are proven to result in children with serious health issues is more than enough reason to keep them illegal, and honestly, the way the law treats those outcomes is another reason why you can't compare the two. Sure, some (incestuous) couples might decide not to have kids, but having children isn't a prerequisite for marriage, nor is the absence of kids a valid reason to bypass the law. The law doesn't just pick and choose based on whether someone intends to procreate or not; you can't just grant permission for incestuous relationships to certain people just because they opt out of having offspring. Besides, people change their minds or end up with an unexpected pregnancy anyway.

The whole point of this thread is comparing incest to homosexuality within the Religion forum. The moderators have already made it clear that you shouldn't be drawing parallels between homosexuality and incest here, and there is already a separate, dedicated thread for discussing incest, which I've linked before.
Which specific threads are we talking about? You should probably report those posts to the moderators, or if you want, just drop the links right here.

coppersailor28 said:It’s impossible. Drawing parallels between homosexuality and incest just proves the person doing it is either intellectually incapable of handling a real debate... or they’re just being a provocateur.

Give me one example of such a parallel. Apparently, you think they exist.

Comparing homosexuality to incest isn't a valid argument because the two things have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

Timothy Martinez6 said:But what happens when you use an example like incest just to test a specific argument being used to support legalizing same-sex unions, exactly like I laid out in my opening post? In that case, it makes zero sense to debate this under the topic of incest... it only belongs where that specific argument is actually being used to push for same-sex marriage...

If that's the rule, then fine, it’s the rule. I just wish someone would provide a single shred of a logical explanation for it...

It's pretty hard to see how an incest example could serve as a way to argue for the legalization of same-sex unions, since they are two completely different issues, and even the law treats them in totally different ways.

coppersailor28 said:A beautiful example of a rational, argued, and civilized counterargument...

So, it is possible after all.

Can we have an actual, reasoned debate here? Of course we can! As long as we stick to the topic at hand, follow the PDF guidelines, and respect the rules of the forum, there's absolutely no reason why we can't dive deep into a real discussion.

Look, I really need to get this off my chest because I can't stop thinking about it. We need to talk about the whole issue surrounding how certain social shifts will Encourage incest. It’s one of those topics that just hits a nerve, you know? It feels like we're heading down a path where the traditional boundaries that hold a society together are being completely ignored. Honestly, it's unsettling to think about how much things are changing. Look, there's already a dedicated thread under the Religion section for this kind of thing, so honestly, it feels pretty out of place to shove it into a discussion about homosexuality.

Look, if you want to head out, that’s totally on you. No need to clog up the boards by making a whole thing out of it with an announcement.

Look, generally speaking, you shouldn't. I mean, if a moderator tells you straight up and clearly that it’s allowed, then fine—I won't argue with that—even though I honestly don't see much point in doing it, and it’ll probably just end up confusing everyone else on the board anyway.
What are the rules/guidelines for posting? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
All you really need to do is report a user's post and explain exactly what the issue is, or just shoot a quick DM over to one of the admins with a link to the content in question. You can always start a new thread about it too, though please make sure you include specific details so we actually know what we're looking at. Just a heads-up: vague complaints about rule-breaking won't really fly without substance—it’s best to take a quick look at the community guidelines first so you know what qualifies.

She’s definitely wrong on that one, but honestly, nobody has even bothered to report a user with an avatar like that yet.
What are the rules/guidelines for posting? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Slafko didn't actually frame his question in a way that allowed for a real answer. I was very upfront with him over on his own thread in the Rules & Guidelines section, making it clear that discussions regarding whether our guidelines might change are strictly for us behind the scenes—which is exactly what we’re doing right now. He received several warnings before the ban actually happened, so it definitely wasn't some random decision out of nowhere. And just a heads-up, we aren't going to turn this thread into a debate about why Slafko was banned.

As for how we handle the rules, I’ve mentioned before that there isn't a rigid, black-and-white rulebook for everything; instead, the admin team uses its discretion to make calls based on the guidelines we follow. When it comes to avatars, if we decide one isn't appropriate for the community, we don't just jump straight to a ban—we reach out to the user first to let them know and remove the image. Any attempt to upload that same avatar again after that warning is considered a direct act of defiance and a violation of our policies.

Hey everyone, can we please just dial back the bickering? It’s getting a bit much.

Edit:

coppermarlin13 said:edit: Hey mods, could you please just lock this thread? The issue is officially sorted out.
Look, I’m not trying to be offensive here, but like I mentioned to the user who originally posted it, it definitely comes across as trolling. On JLL, we tend to be a lot more laid-back about trolling compared to most other subreddits or forums out there. In a lot of other online communities, a post like that would have gotten you instantly banned.

Moving back to the topic at hand: this thread is staying up on JLL for now.

(The point was that how things look on an admin's personal machine shouldn't be taken as the standard.)

Let me repeat what rustydrifter10 said for your benefit:
"The signature is in two lines and" /sarcasm/ "it's perfectly fine"...

Sure, let's blame my failure to grasp your point so we can get back to your lecturing; specifically in the style of "and your other problem, coppersailor28, is..."...
Because, obviously, an image of those dimensions is one of the great tragedies of the World Wide Web—it completely wrecks both the page layout and the reader's psyche.
Go ahead, ban me.

It’s not just about me; it affects plenty of people here. Just because someone decides to shrink their window or happens to be using a tiny little monitor doesn't give me any right to go around stripping other people's signatures. Even my laptop screen isn't exactly huge, yet my signature still fits perfectly within the rules.

darkmarlin16 said:I honestly don't get why you always have to bring that up. 🤷

Clearly, we're not on the same page here. All I want is for my signature to show up in four lines on my screen, just like the one I see on yours. 😉

Come on, stop with the provocations. Just set your signature however you want, as long as it stays within the guidelines. If the site administration decides it's breaking the rules, they'll remove it and let you know.

We get all these reports sent straight to our inbox, and honestly, we don't usually bother replying to them individually. There are just way too many coming in, and if we tried to sit down and hash out every single one of them, we'd never get anything else done! So, here’s the deal: go ahead and file your report, we'll take a look at it, and then we'll step in and make whatever calls we feel are necessary. 🙂

And mods, please, can we get rid of these people who are just here to mock the topic?

Look, don't show up to the FBI unless you actually have a legitimate reason to be there—like bringing a specific complaint backed up with links proving exactly where the mods messed up or missed something.

Patrick Bailey4 said:I honestly feel that when we're talking about such heavy, sensitive topics in the final stages, we really need to be incredibly careful about who we choose for moderation.

See, the thing is, moderators aren't picked based on specific subject matter; they're chosen to oversee an entire sub-forum. And any given sub-forum can host topics that are sensitive to all sorts of different groups, often involving wildly conflicting worldviews. We simply can't have enough moderators to cover every single possible perspective, which is why we look for high-quality community members—people we trust to maintain a clear line between their own personal opinions and their duties as moderators, ensuring they don't compromise the integrity of the threads or the board itself.

Patrick Bailey4 said:rustydrifter10 doesn't get to dictate what a moderator thinks, obviously, but they can certainly take those viewpoints into account during the selection and confirmation process. They can also provide guidance to the mods on what to watch out for and describe the specific kind of personality profile the board needs...

Look, I can definitely take into account the people I know and consider essential, but I can't possibly know everyone, and frankly, not every single opinion carries weight here.

Patrick Bailey4 said:So, if you're absolutely certain the referendum is going to swing the other way...

Look, I’m not "certain" about anything, and honestly, I really don't want to sit here and argue based on nothing but guesses about what might happen.

Patrick Bailey4 said:But even without me doing all that—even without this poll—I can tell just by reading through the threads and seeing how people interact what the majority of the moderation team stands for. If you're claiming you don't know that, then either
you're lying or
or

you aren't actually reading the forum.

You keep trying to pin things on me, and I’ve already asked you to stop! It is totally impossible for me to know the specific political leanings of every single moderator. I don't spend my life dissecting every single post from everyone who applied for a mod position; I mostly just focus on the official applications they submitted. Sure, I glance at other stuff, but it's just not realistic to expect me to be an expert on everyone's private opinions, especially since not everyone posts everywhere. I can't just jump to conclusions about what every single person thinks about every single issue.

Patrick Bailey4 said:Every online community eventually becomes a reflection of the types of people the moderators allow to stay.

In my opinion, the margin in the vote was way too slim to claim that anyone with opposing views was kicked out. Besides, you're still throwing around these heavy accusations without providing a shred of evidence, even after I pointed out that we have rules against doing exactly that. Please, if we're going to keep this conversation going, could you actually bring something concrete to the table? Otherwise, there isn't much point in talking.

Patrick Bailey4 said:I’m only going to bring up one single, recent example to back up what I've been saying, because honestly, it’s so incredibly convincing that I think it speaks for itself.

Look, you can't just take one single poll as some definitive truth. On this specific thread, we’ve had 695 people weigh in on this particular option so far—with 384 voting for one choice, which technically makes it the majority, though there were 257 votes for the runner-up among the four choices offered. Out of those 695 voters, 24 of them are part of the site administration, and 21 of those went for the current frontrunner. Now, considering our total admin team consists of 183 members, I'm certainly not going to sit here and claim that those 21 votes represent 90% of the leadership, nor do I have any way of knowing how the rest of them would feel or vote if they had participated. Honestly, I don't even bother trying to figure that out because it doesn't matter to me. I'm not sitting here tallying up who is male or female, who leans left or right, whether someone is religious or an atheist, or what social group they belong to; none of that stuff is relevant when it comes to moderating this community.

I think you probably already have a pretty good idea of how the moderator selection process actually works around here. Right now, they pick a candidate, I weigh in with my approval or disapproval, but honestly? It’s incredibly rare—almost unheard of—for me to be the one stepping up to suggest someone. At the end of the day, the final call always rests with Anderson.

Patrick Bailey4 said:I think Primjer is trying to make a point about how biased this whole place can be. It feels like the mods basically curate the conversation to ensure almost everyone stays within the same ideological bubble, pushing a very specific worldview. You see it everywhere—it’s baked into the way discussions are steered and even in the specific types of PDFs being circulated around here. It just feels like there's a massive lack of objectivity when the people running the show are all pulling in the exact same political direction.

Look, if you’re going to complain about how this thread was handled, I need more than just a vague feeling—give me a link to the specific discussion and provide several actual examples to back up what you're saying, not just one isolated incident. Just because a few of the moderators happen to agree on this one particular point doesn't mean they’re a monolith. They aren't a hive mind; they don't all share the exact same worldview or political leanings on every single issue that comes our way. And most importantly, it absolutely does not follow that they are all sitting around consciously and subjectively rigging things just to screw over anyone who disagrees with them.

If you take a quick look at the rules for this subforum, you’ll spot a specific section that explicitly forbids throwing around accusations without backing them up with actual, concrete evidence. To be honest, looking through everything you've just laid out, I'm simply not seeing any proof to support those claims of yours.

Patrick Bailey4 said:How on earth is it even possible that 90% of the elected moderators hold one specific viewpoint in a country where the vast majority of people actually feel the exact opposite? It just doesn't add up, does it?

Look, we’ve already established that it isn't even close to being 90% moderators. To actually answer your question—if we set the specific numbers aside for a second—I'd say the odds of that happening are about the same as the chances of almost every single person on this forum holding the exact same opinion at the same time right here in the States.

Patrick Bailey4 said:Why on earth does your opinion carry weight when it comes to picking sub-moderators?

Look, honestly, almost all of these moderators joined the admin team way before this whole referendum debate even started, let alone this specific thread. For most of them, I didn't even know what their political leanings were, and frankly, it never really crossed my mind to care.

Patrick Bailey4 said:I’ll get straight to the point here: rustydrifter10, if you still—despite all the clear facts laid out right in front of us—truly believe or claim that this forum is heading in an objective, fair direction that serves absolutely everyone who wants to write here, then:
either a.) you're being so biased that you're completely blind to reality, or
b.) you're intentionally steering the forum toward your own agenda regardless of how one-sided it becomes.

You aren't exactly presenting me with many options here, so please, don't try to pin either of those labels on me! At the end of the day, forums are run by actual human beings, not some flawless computer algorithm; a little bit of subjectivity is perfectly normal and honestly expected. Problems only really arise when decisions are repeatedly and deliberately made to screw over one side, and I truly don't think any of the moderators who voted in that poll are doing anything of the sort.
