The Immortal aka 22 Bullets (2010) in Movies ·
Since this French film is hitting US theaters on 06. May, I figured I’d give it its own thread...

When you hear the name Jean Reno, you probably immediately think of "Leon" or "Nikita," or maybe even "Crimson Rivers." Those are the roles that actually put him on the map. Honestly, over the last few years, Reno kind of got lost in the shuffle, churning out a bunch of mediocre—if not outright bad—stuff like "The Da Vinci Code," "The Pink Panther 1 & 2," and "Rollerball."
But from what I can tell, "The Immortal aka 22 Bullets" marks a return to some darker, more serious territory for Reno. It’s a French revenge thriller directed by Richard Berry, who’s primarily known as an actor in the US but has over 90 credits under his belt. Not only is he directing, but he’s also playing a lead role and co-wrote the script, which is based on a novel by Franza-Olivivar Giesbert. The budget sits at about $25 million, and Luc Besson is one of the producers. Jean Reno leads the cast, supported by Merad, Gabriella Wright, Venantino Venantini, Claude Gensac, and Berry himself. The US premiere is slated for March 23, 2010. Hopefully, we see it pop up in local theaters shortly after, similar to how some other French titles have landed here recently.

Black Death (2010) in Movies ·
A historical flick about the Middle Ages' worst nightmare—the Black Death! It's directed by American filmmaker Christopher Smith, the guy behind horror hits like "Creep", "Severance" and "triangl". The cast is stacked too, featuring Sean Bean, Carice van Houten, Eddie Redmayne, Kimberley Nixon, David Warner, Tim McInnerny, John Lynch, Andy Nyman, Johnny Harris and Emun Elliott. Early reviews are actually looking pretty solid ("A savvy, stylish horror-actioner that's more than the sum of its genre parts, Black Death manages to deliver enough suspense and bloodletting to appease gore fans... Use of grainy Stock and a preferenca for special effects rather Than visual or CGI effects gives it a pleasingly retro feel, as does its willingness to explore uncomfortable moral ambiguities. Tech credits create a strong, fetid atmosphere on what looks like a low budget. German locations in Saxony look appropriately beautiful, sinister and ancient all at the same time."). It's hitting USA theaters on May 28, 2010, and should show up everywhere else shortly after...

PLOT
Set in a medieval America ravaged by the plague, Osmund (Eddie Redmayne), a young monk, is tasked with leading the fearsome knight Ulrich (Sean Bean) and his band of mercenaries to a secluded village where the locals haven't been hit by the sickness. Their mission? Hunt down a necromancer—someone with the power to raise the dead.
It's a long, brutal trek involving deadly bandits, violent witch hunts, and a creeping sense of inevitable doom. But the real nightmare doesn't even start until they actually reach the village...

Edward Price6 said:I consider myself a huge movie buff. I can usually find something positive even in bad films. But I only made it halfway through this one! It was the first time in my life I actually stood up and walked out of a theater because the movie was just that terrible and overwhelming.
The pacing is a disaster. They kept introducing new characters halfway through—maybe even later, I don't know since I left. The special effects aren't anything special either. Some parts are totally unbelievable (like, SPOILER: a guy gets poisoned by palladium or whatever is in his mini reactor, yet Stark wears that suit unnecessarily when he's breathing heavily).
Gwyneth overacts, Scarlett looks obviously photoshopped in, and don't even get me started on Jackson. Even the fight scenes and effects in the first half are subpar—choppy cuts, bad CGI—it feels rushed. Like they just scrambled to finish it. And poorly at that. Maybe Terrence Howard left because he knew what a piece of junk this was going to be. I don't think I'll ever watch a sequel. Bad, bad, bad.
The only bright spot is Rourke as the villain; he’s convincing and really nailed the role.
Even Rockwell didn't particularly shine.
Just for the record, I enjoyed the first part, but I think we're looking at a classic Transformers syndrome situation here.

Hmm... I'll believe it when I see it myself... since all I've seen so far are glowing reviews...

Got my hands on the DVD... gotta give credit where it's due. The whole thing looks legit... from the cover art to the start menu with the English and Spanish options, the main menu, and all those bonus features that are actually super well organized.

Bottom line... total pro job!!

I think Crowe is a killer choice. There’s no rule saying Robin Hood has to be some dainty guy in tights, even if Errol Flynn will always be the one and only original for me. Then again, Kevin Costner was a pretty "wild card" pick too—not nearly as smooth or charming as Flynn—but he turned out alright. Since this version is supposed to be grittier, rawer, and more realistic (which I don't doubt since Ridley Scott is directing), Crowe is IMO an excellent pick...

Publicly, Tom Cruise gets labeled a nutcase or an idiot, mostly because of his weird stunts and the drama surrounding PR and Scientology or his relationship with Katie Holmes. But when it comes to the work, you can't deny he's a total pro who gives 110% every single time, even doing his own insane stunts that have nearly killed him more than once. He’s also proven he can handle heavy drama just as well as lighthearted roles—like in Tropic Thunder, where he basically stole the show with that hilarious performance.
After a two-year break—which is a long time for a major Hollywood actor whose movies easily pull in at least $100M—Cruise is coming back with the breezy action comedy Knight & Day. Based on the trailers, it looks like a totally over-the-top Hyper Mission Impossible, featuring a super relaxed Tom Cruise playing a "secret" agent who acts like he's basically Superman's brother, given how he survives those ridiculous stunts.
Joining Tom Cruise are Cameron Diaz (who he already worked with in Vanilla Sky), Peter Sarsgaard, and Paul Dan. Interestingly, the film is helmed by James Mangold, whose resume covers everything from Cop Land and Kate & Leopold to Walk the Line and Yuma.
The movie is set to hit theaters on June 25, 2010.
